About this listen

The secret is locked in her mind - and they'll do anything to get it.

Generations ago, humanity was devastated by a virus that wiped billions from the planet. If not for AmeriGlobe's Pairing program to match immune survivors, and VaxWell's immunity-boosting biomods, humans would've died out.

Lora Flannigan has sought to conform to the strict laws throughout her 18 years, and after the Testing she now stands on the brink of a prestigious pairing with high-caste Jarid. Accepting the match will pull her and her family up from their low-caste existence.

But Lora never counted on the sparks that ignite when she meets her Pair's striking brother: Syeth - dark, brooding and harboring secrets. But before she's managed to make sense of her feelings, he's embroiled her in the rebellion underworld.

And when still darker truths come to light, Lora realizes the purpose behind not only her pairing...but her very existence.

This book has in theory an interesting plot, and take on a dystopian society, but spent too little time actually world building. If the plot had been spread into three books, one leading up to the selection process and pairing, one about transitioning fully to life after pairing, and one focused on the big conflict it’d be 10x better, instead I feel no stakes in the characters because honestly I don’t even know who the main character is emotionally speaking. Additionally having one guy character named Jeremy and another named Jered got a little confusing at times since neither character has any traits that make them stand out.

Too rushed

I enjoyed this book and the storyline, but the performance by the woman reading the book was like I was listening to the entire thing on fast forward…like seriously slow down!

Enjoy the Story not the performance

The story was amazing and the narrator was OK I think her rough voice doesn’t really match the characters voices

Amazing story!

The voice actor's voice bothered me. Too fast and no real performance. Then, the book just ended .. mid sentence !! Don't bother.

What happened ?

I read the author's "culling" series, which was ok. This was like a different author. Goes for zero to 60 in 2 chapters. No character building at all so anything the characters do seems stupid, illogical, or reckless. This "book" was more like a crappy first draft or outline in which the author planned to go back and fill in all the connective tissue that makes a book work.

Too bad to even finish
