About this listen

Nineteen-year-old Lizzy and her young brother, Thomas, find themselves orphaned after a tragic accident claims the lives of their parents. Their estranged uncle Cline arrives to claim his inheritance, and his roguish ways cast a shadow over the manor. Both the family estate and guardianship of his niece and nephew were left to him, and diabolical Uncle Cline is determined to indulge in his newfound wealth and rid himself of his charges. Desperate to save her brother from a dangerous life at sea and herself from being married off to a detestable old gentleman, Lizzy knows there is only one choice left - they must run.

Lizzy and Thomas sneak away and find refuge in an abandoned cabin. There they remain hidden - until fate acquaints Lizzy with Mr. Barton, a charming gentleman who is immediately intrigued by the mysterious young woman. Concealing her identity, Lizzy is unaware that there is much more to this compassionate man than meets the eye. Through his kindness to herself and her brother, Lizzy begins to trust him. Soon, Lizzy realizes Mr. Barton may be her best hope for a life in which she can live - and love - as she chooses....

Very predictable. Just okay.

Boy meets girl. Bad guy threatens girl. Boy saves the day. Yes, the story is that boring.

Damsel in distress extreme

The obvious storyline was tedious and repetitive. The problem solving skills were so limited and frustrating.

Buckets of tears

If you like heroines who do little but weep, this is the book for you. The storyline is sparse, and character development is less than minimal, but there are many pages devoted to tears.

Loved this story

This tale takes you on a journey of a young girl leaving everything she knows with her younger brother to escape an arranged dreadful marriage. It is suspenseful, yet sweet.

Fabulous story!

The storyline doesn’t miss a beat! It was the perfect length without lag of characters conversation or internal thoughts. I could feel the male hero’s love as it was being displayed throughout the book. However, I felt the female lead lacked enthusiasm and feeling toward her hero. But on the other hand; the herons personally, circumstances and even the narrator may had something to do with that conclusion. I wish the ending gave a little more of a glimpse into the characters future life. All and all this was a fabulous story, it kept me wanting more and I had a hard time putting it down. I Loved it!

The main character is not believable

I could not finish this book because this woman, who had lied previously to avoid a fate worse than death for her brother and herself, submits to the same situation because she had “given her word”. There was no guarantee that her brother would be protected by her sacrifice. There was another alternative but had she taken it the book would have come to an end sooner. I wish it would have ended sooner so I stopped reading.

Loved it!

Perfect, all of it. Only complaint was her leaving again at the end. That didn't make a lot of sense. Otherwise enjoyed the entire book. Thank you for such a pleasant adventure!

Disappointed

While there were a few enjoyable parts to this book, I lost track of how many times I rolled my eyes while listening. I cannot be more specific without giving away spoilers but suffice it to say a little common sense and maturity on the part of multiple characters would’ve been nice. In fact, the last 9 chapters are overly dramatic and entirely unnecessary. Not to mention that the FMC shows no genuine affection for the MMC until the last chapter. I don’t know why he even bothered with her, frankly.

This is the 3rd book I’ve listened to with this narrator but it’s been awhile and I forgot how much I dislike her performances. She makes the characters sound like whiny children and is so stagey at times that it’s cringeworthy.
