Publisher's summary

Jeff Powell is in over his head.

He has a deadline to meet, an agent to satisfy, a barista to impress, and now, to top it all off, he's stuck in the world of his best-selling fantasy series.

A world, it turns out, that doesn't even like him.

Instead of deadlines, he's got dragons.

Instead of an impatient agent, he's got characters who hate him.

The girl of his dreams? Well, at least that's one less thing to worry about if he can't find his way home.

He thought he knew his story inside and out, but as a growing evil closes in on the world he created, he'll learn just how deadly a fantasy can be.

If you love stories about imagination and courage, of friendships and sacrifice, you'll love Evensong, the first book of the Meratis Trilogy.

An interesting concept, but lacking execution

The plot line is an interesting concept, but seems to be lacking execution in my opinion. As a writer, the idea excited me of getting to see an author pulled into their story. That being said, it came off rather self-indulgent. The beginning was confusing, the pacing so fast that we barely got to see any of the author's real life before getting pulled into the story. His characters weren't well described and too many were introduced at once that it was somewhat challenging to follow from the outside. I also feel like I'm missing something from the perspective of being introduced to these characters in book four of Jeff's series.

Jeff, the author character, also seems flat, rather uninteresting, and nothing really makes him stand out from the fictional characters of his own creation.

I plan on amending this review once I have completed the story, but I already have several issues with the beginning. His characters summoned him, clearly aware that he has an incredible amount of power over their world, and yet, there is no support for why they know this or why they believe that his powers are real. There is absolutely no confirmation on whether or not they know they are fictional or that he is their author. It kind of seems odd to me that they believe he has all of this power and does not treat him like a God or something, and I wish this relationship was more well-defined in some way.

I like the idea!

It was an interesting story and I like the fun idea of the author going into the world that he had been writing about.. It bothered me that the villain was so strong that it was impossible to beat him, 6nd there was a lot of Gore that I really don't like to read. Other than that it was an interesting story..
