Publisher's summary

2124 was an interesting year...I was court-martialed, demoted and sentenced to perform hard labor for the rest of my natural life...Then things got rough.

"Commodore Catherine Kimbridge...It is the judgment of this court, that for crimes against the people of the Galactic Coalition of Planets - namely a wanton dereliction of duty in allowing the murder of a head of state in your custody - that you should be demoted in rank to private and transported in chains to the Sagatori asteroid penal colony in the Ashkelon star system. There you will remain for the rest of your natural life."

Exciting stuff

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes this was a very interesting short story.

Any additional comments?

I noticed that this was book two in the series, then after listening to the samples I wonder why didn't the use this narrator for the first book. I will be looking forward to continuing the series as they get released. I was provided this audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator in exchange for an unbiased review

Good Science, OK writing

Any additional comments?

First, let me state that I was giving a free credit to listen to and give an unbiased review.

Overall, I thought this story had a lot going for it. The problem I had is that the author tried to cram to much in to one story and so none of the characters could really be fully developed.

Also, as much as I like and appreciate the extra religious add-ins to this book, it just didn't seem genuine. Maybe if you got to know the characters better then this information could have been inserted a little bit better.

Lastly, the Point Of View (POV) transitions weren't done well. Maybe in the actual book, there is an indication that shows you are now listening to a new character but from the audio book I some times couldn't tell when the character POV changed. Which made me get lost for a few moments.

In addition, I thought the audio narrator did a good job. She made the book easy to listen to but she did have very minor hiccup where she repeats a sentence twice in a row. (either that or my phone messed up... but I think it was the recording).

Again, I really liked the science. I liked the terminology. I liked the space fights. Maybe the technology was so advanced that it appeared to be more like magic, but overall it was an OK book. If they would have cut out about 1/4 of the extra plot and doubled the length of the book with good character development than I can see it really going somewhere.

straightforward and generally entertaining

Commodore Catherine Kimbridge goes undercover to discover why spaceships of citizens are being captured and stop the culprits.  Her nanobot enhancements and loyal mates accompany her through a maze of aliens and into the unknown vastness of space.  It is her exceptional skills and wits that stand between death and success.

The strange race of aliens who are responsible for abducting the thousands of humans are not what they seem.  They are slavers, but not all of them believe in the ancient ways.  When they are faced with their own daemons, it is Catherine who must save not only her own people, but her enemies too.

Catherine rises quickly to a trusted position on the alien ship, almost too quickly.  It may be hard for the listener to hold his or her disbelief at the incompetence and simplistic nature of the alien enemies.  They don’t feel all that scary or threatening.  The plot runs along at a fast and linear pace as Catherine continues to save the day.  Any suspense that may have developed, seems to be sucked away at her inevitable successes.

There are interesting worlds and universes that they discover along the way.  The moral dilemma of the slaver aliens is also interesting along with their evolutionary source.  It is a generally entertaining story with several battles and explorations.

The story is performed by L. C. Kane, who does an adequate job.  Her voice is easy to listen to and her character voices are fine.

Exploration is a space opera novel, the third in an ongoing series about the adventures of Catherine Kimbridge.  It is a discrete novel that doesn’t appear to need its predecessor to work; nor does it leave much unresolved that you are looking to read the next for conclusion.  It is a straightforward novel that is generally entertaining, without much suspense.

Interesting and well read

Would you consider the audio edition of Exploration to be better than the print version?

I consider the audio edition of Exploration better than print because I love to have someone read to me... Seems I can see the story much better that way.

Any additional comments?

Love this book, it kept me interested and wanting more. And looking for the next in this series now.

Super-Tech Sci-Fi Adventure

I started with this book without having read the first two in the series. After listening to this book, I will probably go back and listen to the others. I was impressed after the first 30 or 40 minutes.

The story focuses on the main character, a female Admiral. In order to find out more about a ship that is intercepting and kidnapping skilled crews, she goes undercover as recently court-martialed and on her way to a prison colony. What she and her fellow prisoners discover is an alien race that while technologically inferior, is of unbelievable size and has managed to create a technology to travel to parallel realities. after being taken prisoner and taken to their reality, she discovers that the aliens that have taken them are part of a small group of the alien race that may not be what they seem.
Along the way, they discover another alien race thought long-dead, but could now be a potential ally against their new enemy.

I call this a "Super Tech Sci-Fi Adventure" because of some of the technology used by the Admiral. While I still liked the story and I found all of the concepts interesting, I thought that some of the tech was closer to magic than conceivable technical achievement.

Also, the narrator was very good, but some of the very obvious mispronunciations drove me crazy sometimes. While she was a good performer, I can't give anything more than 3 stars to her for constantly annoying me. If your not OCD like me, then it probably won't bother you, though.

This was worth the listen, but you don't have to have listened to the other books to enjoy it.

I received a free copy of this audiobook from the author, publisher, or narrator in exchange for an unbiased review. I was NOT required to write a positive review and this reflects my honest opinion of the work.
