Publisher's summary

We often think of doubt as the opposite of faith, but could it actually strengthen our relationship with God? According to John Ortberg, best-selling author and pastor, the very nature of faith requires the presence of uncertainty.

In this refreshingly candid look at a life of faith, he traces the line between belief and unbelief: less a dividing line between hostile camps than a razor's edge that runs through every soul.

His findings point us toward the relief of being totally honest. Questions can expand our understanding, uncertainty can lead to trust, and honest faith can produce outrageous hope. Written from Ortberg's own struggle with faith and doubt, this book will challenge, comfort, and inspire you with the truth that God wants all of us - including our doubts.

Intriguing, fascinating and mind opening

Wow, this one really surprised me. It was deeper than I'd expected, and honest. The author takes you into the territory of Doubt, rather courageously, and there he finds that doubt can be helpful for the soul. He brought up a lot of ideas and perspectives that were new to me. The whole book, which is very well written, opened my mind. Truly, I'm grateful for writers like John Ortberg for honestly examining spiritual ideas like faith and doubt. In the end he tells you his "conclusions" about faith and God, but he invites the reader to find his/her own. This was my first book by the author.

Doubt can be good

I listened to this book with hope that after all these years of being a Christian I can still believe and have doubts. The first half of the book I also quit listening due to the material he covers to show what doubt is and is not. I am glad I got through the text as the last couple of chapters helped me take a look at my faith and how doubt helps me build my faith. This is a must read for those who live with doubt and wonder if they can still be a believer.

One of the best!

As a consumer of Apologetic books, I found this one to be very unique in a great way. The author has a good way of communicating his thoughts. As a thinker and doubter I will keep this one handy for regular listening.

Doubt can be Helpful

We are taught that doubt kills faith. We are told that faith is required. Ortberg talks about how these two dance for the believer and that is good. Ortberg makes you think as he challenges your previously held beliefs on doubt.

One of the best books on faith and doubt.

I am a Christian. And I am a doubter. Most of the time I wish I didn't doubt. But after almost 40 years of being a Christian, I'm beginning to see doubt very differently. I now know it is an essential ingredient of faith. Without doubt, it is impossible to have faith. What Ortberg got me to do, even more than Yancy or CS Lewis, was to begin exercising the same doubts about my doubt, as I had been about my faith. The book is short. He is very likeable. And the writing is deceptively simple. He faces straight on the hard hard questions, and doesn't give any answers he doesn't have. He doesn't solve the whole puzzle of faith. That would be impossible. But he makes you think. My faith is a little stronger because of this book, and this man.

Honest and good

I have always loved the teachings of John. Even though he firmly stands on his faith in God, he refrain from appaireing dogmatic. Great book for unbelievers and for teens with questions about God an life
