About this listen

Brooks Johnson’s words to live by:

When returning to Licking Thicket, TN, for the first time in 10 years to reunite with your nosy neighbors, heartbroken ex-girlfriend, and matchmaking mama who never quite believed you were gay, it’s best to bring a fake boyfriend as backup.

Just don’t be surprised when your ex-girlfriend does the same. And when her incredibly hot fake boyfriend becomes the one island of calm in a sea of bovine-based insanity, it’s best to exercise caution, especially when he pushes you up against the rough barn wall to check you very thoroughly for splinters.

Just don’t be surprised if you fall head-over-hooves in love with him.

cute story, sweet guys!

a turn on an old premise. Mal and Brooks are both super sweet, making the story a joy to listen to. the Thickiteerians are a hoot. a great, light, listen full of fun. michael dean does a great job filling out their personalities.

push through the female friend. she DOES turn out okay, I promise (I got to not quite 2 hours in and almost gave up but pushed through).

Great story with all the feels!

Brooks’ and Mal’s story is wonderfully told by the authors and performed by the narrators. Their characters are authentic, while still being a lot of fun to get to know. Just the right amount of angst between the main characters. The rest of the players in the story make it a very fun and fast-paced listen. Great narration and loved this title so much. Sad when it came to an end.

Overall an OK book

For full disclosure, I read other’s reviews before I purchased this and agree with some and disagree with others and I am from Tennessee. My initial thought was to give this book a 2 or 3 star rating, but I figured that wouldn’t be fair because typical audience is probably not southern and wouldn’t catch typical southern nuance that is completely missing. As far as narration, I’ve become completely spoiled by the likes of Sean Crisden, Alexander Sendece (hope spelling is correct), Iggy Toma, and Shannon Gunn. Every narrator (voice actor, actor, performer… is there a consensus on how to refer to them?) has a few mistakes and I always wonder if it’s a typo on the page but they have to stay true to what’s written or mispronounced. In this situation, the story would have hugely benefited from a southern narrator. As someone visually impaired, I won’t complain about it. Glad the book was available as an audio book. And if you listen to copyright info, most things in this genre are self published so the author is having to fund the audio version making me add two stars. If I haven’t lost you already in this review my biggest complaint is the you can sacrifice for me but I should sacrifice for you and both people fearing resentment. This weekend I listened to 2 books like that and it’s annoying that something that would be a 5 minute conversation turns into chapters if 13 year old angst. That age group isn’t supposed to buy these titles. I’ll continue with the series. Hope I made it clear I did not get a free copy of the audible and I did pay for my own copy.

Lots of Shuffling

I loved the humor in each fake boyfriend being interested in the other person. I found it interesting to really see Brooks grow through the story. We also got to see Mal work through his past. This story has a great ending. The audio was fun to listen to.

Hometown good

Fantastic story, predictable but absolutely beautiful characters and I just couldn’t love them all anymore. I couldn’t put it down. The country boy in me cried like a baby at the end. Bravo!

Hilarious and fun and so sweet

This was such a great twist on the fake boyfriend trope, and I loved every hilarious twist and turn of the story! I loved the low angst and the sweetness of it all.

Color me shocked, because I usually don’t particularly care for Michael Dean as a narrator. He’s normally either over the top with delivery, or reads like he’s narrating vs performing. In this instance, his delivery is spot on and was thoroughly enjoyable. I may have to reconsider my ban on books he narrates.

This is a definite yes on my recommend list.
