About this listen

Meet Julian, Dick, Anne, George and Timothy. Together they are The Famous Five.

'There was something else out on the sea by the rocks - something dark that seemed to lurch out of the waves...What could it be?'

Julian, Dick and Anne are spending the holidays with their tomboy cousin George and her dog, Timothy. One day, George takes them to explore nearby Kirrin Island, with its rocky little coast and old ruined castle on the top.

Over on the island, they make a thrilling discovery, which leads them deep into the dungeons of Kirrin Castle on a dangerous adventure. Who - and what - will they find there?

The narrator does a splendid job with the characters by giving each a unique voice.

Although some of the children’s antics are quite old fashioned it is understandable given this book was written in 1942. It can offer great opportunities for discussion should one wish to engage this way

A lovely family story

I have always loved the Famous Five series. Safe, fun, action (and food) filled adventures for kids! Jan Francis is an excellent narrator, not only giving each character a distinct voice, but acting and performing throughout. Highly recommended.

Thumbs up to a great adventure. The children are lovely and the story has a great twist. Could do without some of the boy vs girl issues but overall great.

Great adventure and splendid performance!

This is a great story to get acquainted with the Famous Five series.
Insightful characterisations, believable storyline, skilfully performed by Jan Francis.
Don't be put off by the one voice doing all of the characters. More professional
and enjoyable to listen to than the use of various child voices used in the dramatisations.
May take a few minutes to get used to the voices, but once you do, you're on your way.
