About this listen

Wilde Contract Killing and Fish Training, how can I help you?

Murder contract? Piece of cake. Find a jinn? No problem.

New necromancy powers while being followed by an unwanted vampire bodyguard? Not so much.

Trained to handle even the fiercest undead, Dallas Wilde took out a powerful necromancer without breaking a sweat. Okay, that's a lie—there was tons of sweat, but he was victorious all the same.

Unfortunately, killing a necromancer comes with some repercussions. Broody, annoying, vampire repercussions and new abilities to resurrect the dead.

Can Dallas navigate his blood-sucking bodyguard, new powers, feelings for his attractive client and still handle his contract in time to pay his very, very late rent—all while trying not to get super murdered in the process?

Let's hope so.

Fun adventure Great read

love the story and characters. The sex scenes are also just long enough to keep you interested without letting ADD set in. Plus the book is about the story. it's not about the sex even though there is a lot of sexy bits throughout the story. Finally, I really love how the author wrapped up the story. The reader can guess what's going to happen in the final conflict, but there was a tiny twist after that scene that made it worth guessing correct.

Conflicted

As an avid UF fan this book seemed like a clear slam dunk. It has all the building blocks: plucky MC with more snark than sense or luck, dour sidekick to play straight man to the MC, creatures from myth and nightmare. Slam dunk! Things start to go awry with the obligatory romance subplot/love triangle. The expected trope feels like it moves from subplot to main plot with the repeated references to the MC's libido and desires MM physical relations. It honestly seemed that chapter 15 was fully devoted to graphically describing a spicy encounter for the MC. My issue isn't with the MM loving (LGBTQ folks have sex too and deserve representation!), but the fact that after a while this starts to read like a smutty romance cosplaying as UF. So much so that it feels like the world building and magic system took a bit of a back seat. A label was needed!
Which brings me to my conflict. There's enough UF to keep me intrigued for another book, but I worry I'll find another extra spicy book (Think the book that one girl you know saw on TikTok and can't stop raving about!) that's light on the supernatural and mystery.

SEXY M/M Paranormal ROMANCE!

I liked this book a lot, as it is the type of book I enjoy. But just a HEADS UP to those new to this author.... while it is a fantasy, it is also a M/M romance. As in there is EXPLICIT sexual content involving 2 (or more) men together. While I happen to really enjoy that type of book, I know it's not for everyone. It was only because I am familiar with the author that I knew what to expect. Since NOTHING, not the category, the description, or even the single male narrator (who is awesome BTW), that indicates that this book not only includes M/M romance, but is quite explicit in doing so. So if that is your jam... and you are 18+, I absolutely recommend this book. But if that isn't for you, I recommend you look elsewhere :).

It would be unfortunate for such a great book to get bad reviews because it is not in the right category for its target audience!

On a side note... Maz Maddox, you might be my spirit animal... another awesome book!

SUPREMELY entertaining!

4.5

Okay, so lets start by saying that I've always enjoyed Maz's writing, but wow. This was good... I laughed SO MUCH through this whole thing. I genuinely liked all of the characters, the plot, and the humor. A freaking assassin fish trainer? I need to see a training session. I'm dying.

------Spoilers below------

The oooooonly thing I personally didn't love was the drug use and the sex scene with the rando. Not saying it wasn't done well, and honestly it didn't ruin the book in any way... I just really don't enjoy sex scenes outside of the relationship. It's definitely a preference. The drug use was also done well, I just don't enjoy it.

But seriously? I really only shaved .5 off my rating, so I cant wait for more. I need all three of them together NOW. And exclusive. ASAP.

Maz Maddox and Kirk Graves never disappoint

Kirk Graves knows how to sell a troubled, sarcastic, punk of a MMC. And Maz always gives little Easter eggs of depth to every character. I craved a little more exploration into the characters this time- but I’m hoping some of that will fill in with the continuation of the series. Curious to see how the love interests play out- and how the story expounds on the necromancy/vampire/incubus dynamics. Like I said. Maz Maddox never disappoints and Kirk Graves makes their stories pop off.

Oh my goodness, read this now!

I cannot stress to you how great this book is. It is absolutely one of the wittiest, snarkiest, absolutely enjoyably fun romps through literary trash - and I cannot recommend it enough! Maz absolutely knock this one out of the park. The characters are fun and well thought out, which I was not fully expecting, but was pleasantly surprised for. And the world building was surprisingly well thought out with a rich complex mix of races and magic in a curiously, mixed world of modern technology and classic and occult magic. And don't even get me started on the fish training - chef's kiss! I adore the MC and everything about him. If there are 10 more books in this series and all they do is focus on Dallas being Dallas then I am so absolutely there for that. I already bought the second book and pre-ordered the third - that's how much fun I had with this book. Trust me, read it. Absolutely recommend!
