About this listen

Something is very wrong with the Fitzwilliam estate . . .

It was supposed to be a regular seance job.

But from the minute I met an angry ghost in the hall, I knew there wasn't going to be anything ordinary about this house or its dead residents. First of all, there were way too many of them. Second, some of them had been helped along from living to dead. Third, my attempt to figure out what was going on got a bit sidetracked when I met the gardener.

He was tall, dark green, and handsome.

And really, really smart. So I hired him to help me figure out what was going on. And that's when things got interesting, in more ways than one.

I think I'm falling for an orc, and that's making it really hard to concentrate on doing my job, but if I don't, I'm going to be in a whole heap of trouble.

Contains mature themes.

Fun & Touching

Loved the story and the performance! It's a lovely combination of fantasy, romance, and silliness. There are some surprisingly intense subjects covered in skilfully crafted ways.

Interesting new verse

This story was very enjoyable, and it is a very different verse for me. I quite enjoyed the explanation for all of the various Arcanid types. Of course my favorite part is the ghosties, which is always a fun supernatural element.

The narrator did an amazing job of bringing the characters to life, great choice by the author!

Love the series!

I’ve read all the books so I knew the audiobook would be good. The narrator is new-to-me and has a great voice. He does good with the different characters and keeps my attention.
This is the first book in the series and introduces you to Ward and Mason. The world building is excellent, the way the author uses a virus to explain the different races and abilities is a nice change from other books I’ve read.
Overall a great book and a series that I have recommended to others.

I love this series!

I’ve already read pretty much all of the books, but I’m so excited to find these in audiobook format. The narrator is one I haven’t heard before, but he does a great job and bringing the characters to life with different voices for different characters.

amazing story, odd narrator

The narrator did a great job, but he over dramatized the sex senses and a few other scenes. Honestly the spices scenes made me cringe a little, and I'm an avid smut reader. Still will listen to the rest of the series, the characters are adorable and I love the story.

Ok.

Bought it on sale, it's been sitting in my wish list for a while.
Overall I found the story entertaining, if not a little long.
(I did end up FF through several chapters)

Mason and Ward definitely have a great relationship going, but I find Ward too whiny in spots.
The story itself is unique and that's refreshing. But the repeatedly mention of masks was annoying.

I have to say, for this tale I enjoyed Lady R the best!

I bought book 3 as well, but skipped 2 because of the price difference.

The narration was fine, not one of my favorite but kept the story going.

Fantastic narrator

I really enjoyed the start of this series. This was a new to me author and narrator.
The world building was great and unique. The characters were described very well and they were likable.
What I liked the most was that the angst was outside the main couple and they communicated well with each other.
I look forward to continuing this series.

A long time favorite!

This book is such a breath of fresh air! I've loved the written version for a long time and re-read it several times. The world-building is incredibly fun, and I adore Ward and Mason, the protagonists. Ward is angsty but endearing, and neither of them are too perfect, which I always prefer. I also appreciate an author who isn't afraid to discuss different viewpoints and moralities, and really engage with tough issues. This book isn't 100% perfect in that regard, but it's the beginning of several books that show the author's increasing skill at delving into tough conversations. It's one of those books that manages to deliver on the drama and high stakes, while somehow also remaining really sweet (and spicy, so don't get surprised).

Audiobook-wise, I admit I didn't love the narrator quite as much as I was hoping. Some of the characters felt little bit cartoonish, which doesn't make sense for subsequent books, and doesn't allow the reader to feel the tone and quality of the writing quite as well. The majority works, though, with many clever narration moments, and I still think it's worth the time and credit. Hopefully, that effect is eased somewhat in subsequent books! Either way, words on a page, or listened to, I encourage readers to try this one out!
