Story
Small businesses are the backbone of the US economy. They are the biggest job creators and offer a path to the American dream. But for many, it is difficult to get the capital they need to operate and succeed. In the Great Recession, access to capital for small businesses froze and in the aftermath, many community banks shuttered their doors and other lenders that had weathered the storm turned to more profitable avenues. For years after the financial crisis, the outlook for many small businesses was bleak. But then a new dawn of financial technology, or 'fintech', emerged.

Story
During the Global Financial Crisis in 2008, our financial infrastructure failed. Governments bailed out the very institutions that let the economy down. This episode spurred a serious rethink of our financial system. In DeFi and the Future of Finance, Campbell R. Harvey, Ashwin Ramachandran, and Joey Santoro introduce the new world of decentralized finance. The book argues that the current financial landscape is ripe for disruption and we are seeing, in real time, the reinvention of finance.

What do Google, Snapchat, Tinder, Amazon, and Uber have in common, besides soaring market share? They're platforms - a new business model that has quietly become the only game in town. A platform, by definition, creates value by facilitating an exchange between two or more interdependent groups. So, rather than making things, they simply connect people. The advent of mobile computing and its ubiquitous connectivity have forever altered how we interact with each other. Yet, few people truly grasp the radical structural shifts of the last 10 years.

Best entry-level I've seen
Congratulations to this author for choosing a good wide panorama of the various sub-fields, and giving a good level of understandable detail in each one. I have not seen this wide array of topics in any book anywhere near this price range. I found it easy to concentrate and listen and quickly gain tangible progress on the less familiar areas.

Overly basic
The book was way overly simplistic and basic. Much of it was either explaining very basic concepts such as “what is insurance” or just reading long lists of companies operating in a given space. It’s viewpoint was also problematic, it refused to acknowledge that any of the technologies it was discussing could have down sides or risks, and it presented its predictions for the future of the financial industry as things that would absolutely, definitely occur. This was just not a useful or informative book.
