About this listen

He'll risk his whole heart to save her from the past

Gaby Cane was always a bit afraid of her attraction to Bowie McCayde. Even when she was fifteen and Bowie's family took her in, she had sensed his simmering resentment. Now ten years later, she's an aspiring journalist who can hold her own with any man professionally, the dark shadows of years gone by far behind her. Then Bowie strides back into her life - only this time, he needs her, and the pull of loyalty to his family is too strong to ignore.

When Bowie asked Gaby to help save his family's Arizona ranch, he never expected the girl he once knew to return transformed into a stunning, successful woman. As they work together, Bowie is shocked to find that her innocence and beauty stir a hunger he can't deny. But the rogue rancher can sense something holding her back, and he's determined to uncover the terrible secret Gaby is fighting to keep hidden....

Not Realistic

If this story was set in the present (I'm not sure), then nothing that happened in the newspaper office was accurate. If this is an older book I could let those things go, but I find it hard to believe that ANY Girl/Woman after the 1960's would portray the feelings Gabby did. I have no problem with a story where people wait to be intimate, but most movies even from the 1980's give everyone a sense of how things happen in the bedroom. The little bit of mystery and the narrator made it possible to enjoy the book, but the relationship between Gabby & Bowie was just not something I found believable.

Not your usual western romance!

Enjoyed the characters. Two romances, one young and one a "second season" with some mystery included.

Not What I Expected

Any additional comments?

I was very disappointed with the number of times the lead male character was lighting up a cigarette. I would have expected this action to have been from a book written in the 50's. The lead characters moved from hardly knowing each other to romantically engaged too rapidly. This was the first book of Diana Palmer's that I've listened to, and probably won't listen to another. Not well written, the dialogue is often very stilted.

Fire Brand

I like Diana Palmer's writing but this book was very dated. It was obviously written a long time ago. Attitudes & habits were outdated by today's standards. If you put all that aside though, it was a good story.

Great read

The only thing that bugged me was how the narrator pronounced Bowie. It should be “boo-ee”.
I’m from Texas and that is how it’s pronounced here.
Otherwise, it is a great story.

OLDIE and goodie~ early Diana Palmer 4 stars~

PLOT: Gaby comes home to deal with family issues and confront her passion for Bowie.

15 year old runaway Gaby is found hiding in a horse stall in the barn of the wealthy McCayde family. They take her in and she comes their adopted daughter.Bowie the son and heir sees she has been abused. He is also jealous of the closeness of Gaby and his mother 10 years later Bowie asks Gaby to come home to deal with a "male gold digger' his mother has drug home from a cruise. the HOT passion Gaby and Bowie finally reaches the point where they finally act on it. But the romance must go slowly to gain the trust of Gaby. This is an early Diana Palmer. The Hero Bowie is very dominate but yet works to gain the trust of Gaby. Still a solid early Palmer with a very likeable heroine who matures to both love and passion and eventually trust. I hope Diana Palmer releases some of her other early books they are among her best. Added story is the descriptive beauty of Arizona. 4 STARS~

Sweet !

Diana Palmer never disappoints. Great plot and characters. Truly a must read.
The narrator did an amazing job, she kind of reminded me of Doris Day.
