About this listen
Her death was expected, but something more powerful kept her alive.
Lady Firebird was born to the royal family of Netaia. Because of her birthplace in the family, however, her life is expendable. Honorable suicide is the highest calling she could hope to attain. When she is chosen to lead an attack on the neighboring planet of Veroh, her death is expected. Instead she is taken prisoner during the battle and is held by the enemy.
With her own people seeking her sacrifice, Firebird must choose between two worlds before she can carve out her new destiny. This is the story of Lady Firebird's personal battle and its eternal consequences, not only for herself, but for everyone around her, and especially the man who loves her.

Story
Microbiologist Graysha Brady-Phillips accepts an offer to assist in terraforming the planet Goddard for two reasons: She needs the hazardous duty pay, and she hopes the planet's colonists can provide a cure for the genetic disorder that is slowly killing her. But such genetic engineering has been banned for decades by the powerful Eugenics Board, and Graysha is that board's high commissioner's daughter. When the colonists discover this, she isn't surprised that they ostracize her, for the penalties for conducting their radical research could include death.

Story
They tried to destroy our planets. Our way of life. They tried to send us into extinction. But we, the Coalition, fought them and won. That was a decade ago. They’re known as the Host: a cabal of aliens seeking to dominate our sector of space. And they’re back - with help from a powerful new enemy. We’re outnumbered and unprepared. But there is hope. An ancient race of long-dead but technologically advanced aliens called the Navigators have a ship called the Blackstar that could potentially turn the tide. That is if I, Kai Locke, a humble ship racer, can find it and learn how to harness its power in time.

Great book, some audio issues
I'm so glad to find this series on audio! My problem is with the audio. I think the narrator is fine but I have to listen at 1.10x or 1.20x speed, otherwise it drags so badly it's unusable for me. But I'm still happy its available!

Great book! (Terrible Narrator)
This is a case of a fabulous book (series) dragged down and nearly ruined by a terrible Narrator. I have loves this series all of my adult life, and have waited for it to come out in audiobook format for TWO decades. You cab imagine how elated I was to find out that it was coming to audio! I waited eagerly and saved the books up until I had them all, so I could binge them at work.
I was horrified and very disappointed to find that the Narrator mispronounced many words (even common words that anyone ought to know how to pronounce) and consistently mangled pronunciation to the point of distraction. Her portrayal of the characters was awful, with monotone, inflectionless male voices and often ridiculous, screechy female voices. If I hadn't known how great the books really were, I never would have made it past the first few chapters and I fear the series will suffer. it really is too bad, because the book itself is worthy of 10 stars. but the performance was horrible.

Compelling and enjoyable!
Thoroughly enjoyed this story! Very compelling and the pacing was steady and strong. Loved the psi-elements and bonding concepts. The science was well done and intriguing.

Great series
I just absolutely love this series. I've read most of her other books as well. she's a fabulous author. I wasn't particularly pleased with the voice actor they picked for the reading of the book but it didn't detract from the main story too much.

Interesting characters and world
The story kept my attention even though the narration of the main character was a little annoying. I did speed it up a bit - that helped.

Excellent book.
I love the Firebird series and the Audible version did not disappoint! not sure why several reviewers struggled with the narrator. She wasn't my favorite, but she did a good job. I have downloaded and listened to over 100 books on Audible and the narrator is definitely above par. If you enjoyed the books when they were first released, you will enjoy this audio version

Solid Storyline
While I think the storyline and characters are solid in this book, I believe I struggled quite a bit due to the narrator. I struggled a lot with discerning voices as she did not have enough of a change in voices to help the listener understand who was talking at different times. I also struggled to understand a lot of her pronunciations. Something about how she narrated was incredibly difficult to follow and distracted enough from the story that I didn’t fully become immersed in the characters. I really feel this would be an awesome book to read and could be a 5 start with a different narrator.

Yes!
Ever since I read this book and all of those in the series I have been in love with the story. It is such a joy to hear the greatest story retold in my favorite genre. Since I joined Audible several years ago I have waited for the books to join the ranks. Then it was just a matter of waiting for download day and to see if the narrator would pull it off. It is all I hoped it would be!
