About this listen

The ninth original novel tying into the critically acclaimed and much-missed Firefly series from creator Joss Whedon

It all started with the geese. The Firefly crew is eager to get paid for their latest job, but when payment arrives as a gaggle of geese instead of a purse, their stay on the planet Brome gets an indefinite extension. No matter that the geese will fetch a pretty penny once they get somewhere to sell them. Without coin, they can’t buy fuel, and without fuel, they can’t get offworld. Serenity is stuck.

Luckily the foreman of the local fuel refinery, Lyle Horne, wants to hire them, but not to work in the factory. He needs their help on a job only a crew like Serenity can pull off. Horne is an old friend of Shepherd Book’s. Mal would love to know more, but Lyle’s got bigger fish to fry. An authority known as The Governess has been kidnapping his workers. Lyle wants them back.

The crew need to break into her fortress of an estate and retrieve the workers. Jayne, who suffered a goose-related injury, stays behind to keep an eye on Horne while the rest of the crew split up to infiltrate the fortress. However, the Governess has her own story, as do the workers. Is Lyle lying? While they’re trying to make sense of it all, the workers’ children come aboard Serenity, with a plan to steal the ship and launch their own rescue mission.

This author goes deep

It's great to see the old Serenity crew back in action, but it's even better in the hands of a writer who has such a deep understanding of the characters. A novel can do a lot of things that a TV show or movie can't, and if you're going to read a novel, there isn't much point if it fails to take full advantage of the medium. While the story mostly centers around Shepherd Book, we get a good look at the internal dialogues and deep meanings in every one of the characters. It's a real treat.

Firefly nostalgia gold

Like many of these Firefly novels, this one did not disappoint. Writing and voice acting that takes you back to the Firefly universe- right where you want to be. Highly recommended.

Caught in a fanfic loop

“One might refrain from pun based humor while a man is in pain.”
Yes, the goose and fowl based humor was fun. However, the story itself was pedestrian.

Shepherd: “Didn’t think I’d see the day you’d be the one preaching to me, Captain.”
Mal: “Ain’t gonna lie, Shepherd. It’s a mite uncomfortable.”
I was stoked to see a focus on Shepherd Book. Throughout the book, his dark past is mentioned.
There’s a whole lot of telling (and sadly not showing) how Shepherd did things he’s not proud of.
And yet, for all the telling, I got to the end not knowing one iota more about what he did that was so bad.

“Trust: without it you’ve got a bunch of folks with guns and a grudge, with it you’ve got yourself a crew.”
The entire story is in the summary, except for the final, underwhelming act. The villains were forgettable. The story was also bloated with recaps, reminiscing and character analysis. Remember how Jayne tried to sellout Simon and River? Remember the time that town tried to marry off Mal? Want to think about why Simon doesn’t think he’ll ever marry? Kaylee and Inara are like Mal’s heart, Shepherd is his conscience, and Jayne’s like an old scar. Why is Wash being a worry wort … well, remember that time with Nyska?

Is it too much to ask for something new?
If I want to reminisce, all I have to do is hit play on season 1 or Serenity.
