About this listen

Be careful who you love…

It’s the year 2000, and while Bunny McGarry is theoretically on sabbatical from the police, he just can’t help sticking his nose in where it doesn’t belong.

Rosie Flint is an old acquaintance of Bunny’s whose boyfriend mysteriously disappears off the face of the Earth. What starts out as a simple missing person’s case soon gets a whole lot more complicated when it emerges that the boyfriend is not who he claimed to be, and there are some rather sinister people showing an unhealthy interest in Rosie.

Bunny is only trying to help a friend, but it’s just a matter of time before he finds himself at loggerheads with his colleagues on the force, having to reassess some events from his past and unwittingly involved in a major political coup.

He won’t be able to do this alone, so it is a good thing he can call upon a certain band of kick-ass nuns to do what they do best. And he might even find a use for a 12-year-old boy who is desperate to escape from an Irish language summer school.

Firewater Blues is the sixth book in McDonnell’s critically acclaimed best-selling and increasing inaccurately titled Dublin Trilogy. It mixes high-octane thrills with distinct Irish wit.

Another fabulous adventure!

Another great plot line with the highly entertaining cast of characters that McDonnell has introduced over the course of the series. Didn’t think it could get better.. but it did!! Once again the narrator brought the characters to life - he is clearly the best in the business.

Love these characters!!

I love these books. The characters are great and the narrator is second to none. I’m really going to hate getting to the end of this series.

Witty Irish detective story

Great performance. Story was a pleasure to listen to with all of the different characters that were brought to life by the narrator. This series has a bit of lightness and not of the intense dark detective book type.

Another great book by Caimh McDonnell

I love listening to all of his books especially as Mr. Jones is such a joy to listen to. Dekkie (?) and Ferguson are at the height of their game in this book. Please do yourself a favor and read/listen to all of their books.

Deccie is worth the whole book

Bunny + Deccie (Declan) are an entertaining funfest. Enjoy the flavor, the storyline is secondary to the unique and quirky characters.

Another Belter

Another fantastic book by Caimh McDonnell.

It’s got a big juicy plot about political shenanigans being brought about by crooked means, but that’s not really the point, it’s really about the wonderful characters and the truly hilarious dialogue.

I’ve read lots of novels where the ‘eccentric’ characters are just ridiculous, and the ‘funny’ dialogue is painful, but here there’s more than enough substance to even the most outrageous characters to make their quirks work, and the relationships between them powerful, even moving.

The central character - Bunny - is more entertaining and more interesting with every novel in the series, but several other characters are worthy of their own books, so every book in the series feels like a step deeper into their world, and this book is absolutely no exception.

The narration is beautiful, no hyperbole there, it’s a thing of actual beauty.

I have a To Be Read list in the hundreds (thousands? Possibly), but having just finished this, I’m tempted to go back to the start and listen to it all over again.

Another Winner 🏆

The author's ability to inject humor into absolutely any situation while maintaining suspense for the outcome is nothing short of magical. Morgan C Jones does a fantastic job as always bringing the large cast of characters to life.
