Publisher's summary

Lieutenant Commander Ashton "Ash" Haze has always embraced two things in his life: adventure and women. But when he awakens on an alien planet, there's no time for anything other than survival - or so he thinks.

Kella Ta'Qui is one of the Turbinta - a guild that discards their genetic identities in favor of what they train to become: assassins. Kella has been honing this deadly skill set since she was taken from her home as a child to train. Her first mission is to find and kill whatever was inside the unusual capsule that landed on Tesla Terra, but predator becomes prey when she is wounded by her target. Dazed and confused, she stumbles into a group who plan to sell her to the highest bidder - until a rescuer appears.

Ash has always been a troublemaker, and his navy training ensured that he was able to handle almost anything thrown his way in the past. But when he enters a city in the middle of the desert and discovers a wounded alien woman, nothing could have prepared him for how she affects him. He soon learns that she knows where his fellow crew member might be located, and that knowledge unwittingly thrusts him into the middle of a local civil war. The fight begins, and the race is on to find the other members of Project Gliese 581g crew before the Legion does.

Can an easygoing navy pilot and an alien assassin work together to reach the location of one of the other capsules on the cutthroat Turbintan planet, or will Ash find himself served up to the Legion for the highest number of credits? Whatever happens, the war has begun with the first awakening of the resistance - a resistance that Ash unwittingly volunteered to fight for.

A journey into a great tale.<br />

A story should captivate the reader. it should be an emotional experience ignighting the imagination which once started just can not be put down until the last word of the last chapter. This book does just that on completion one has a sence of loss which comes from any great experience that comes to pass.
an audible book needs a great narrator and this book delivers. there as well an already great story is enhanced elevating the overall experience .

I love this series

Ash is alive and hoping to stay that was while he looks for Josh and any other survivors. He is in prime shape and rescues a beautiful woman warrior/paid killer who has motives for him and any other survivors of project Gliese 581g. Davis Brenin does a fantastic job.

Enjoyable story, builds on Command Decision

I listened to the First Awakenings audio book the day after I listened to Command Decision, and I was glad I had the "back to back" experience. Ash is introduced in Command Decision and while we get to know him a lot better here, I felt already knowing him helped in the early chapters.

I expected this story to pick up after Command Decision, but time wise it back tracks, and parallels Command Decision for quite a while. I enjoyed not only finding out what Ash was doing during those weeks, but getting a different perspective on some scenes, but I don't know if all readers / listeners would like it taking half the story, or more, for it to feel like the high level arc is advancing.

When the meaning / intent of the title was revealed I really liked it, mostly because it was a story element I hadn't assumed was coming. I had been thinking of the title metaphorically for Kella, and perhaps more simply for Ash in this Alien environment.

All in all, I really enjoyed this trip to this Universe and can't wait to find out about May, Sergei and Julia.

I loved Command Decision and First Awakenings!

Great stories! The first book began slowly but once the Earth spaceship took off so did the story. Not your typical romance with nonsense sex scenes but action and adventure mixed in with romance. I hope SE Smith continues the series with the adventures of the other 3 crew members quickly. Listen to both these stories within 24 hours and no sleep. That's how much I enjoyed this adventure into a new galaxy!

Project Gliese great read but ...

Enjoy the author but she always seems to leave the reader hanging. I lreally enjoyed listening to this series, even read book 3 but it has a cliff hanger & it doesn't look as if the author is going to continue with Julia & Ming. Really disappointing.

Good book, well read captivating story line and I love how the love scenes were not so detailed but left to the imagination
