Flex Your Mind 10 Powerful Yoga Principles for Less Stress in a Busy World by Rachel Bonkink has some very good information and it also falls short of the author’s ambitious intention. I love that this book is an attempt to create a bridge between daily modern life and ancient Yoga principles in an accessible, easy to understand way. However, I was dazzled and fooled by the hype surrounding this book. Celebrity endorsements abound. The author is clearly a great marketer. One of the things that brought me to listen to this book was my struggle with how much to keep and how much to forsake my modern life as I journey along my spiritual path. I thought this book might help to bring me some clarity but it only brought further confusion. The author herself is blonde, white, rich and comfortable and many of the suggestions come from that place of privilege. I think in modern times, it is critical for thought leaders to understand and to clarify to their audience that they understand the lens of privilege through which they are presenting their ideas. The narration performance by Victoria Yeates adds an air of sophistication and intellectual authority to the material.

I would recommend this book only to those who are already solidly on their own spiritual path and who have read other resources about the principles and ancient teachings of Yoga. I am concerned that the audience this book is aiming for- people who do not want to be bothered to learn a few terms in Sanskrit and who do not wish to seriously study anything- will stop with this book and not move beyond it.

A Valiant Attempt
