About this listen

From the dark fairy tale forests of Russia...

To the steamy intrigues of a Hong Kong opium den...

From ancestral secrets long hidden in a Paris mansion...

To the rolling, bloody hills of Ireland during the Troubles...

Trapped by circumstance and the events of his past in the USSR, Jamie Kirpatrick struggles to survive in a hostile environment where not all is as it seems and blood bonds are forged with enemies in order to survive.

In Ireland, Pamela and Casey Riordan attempt to live a normal life amid deceit, betrayal, and an unofficial war that claims more than just blood. Bequeathed a legacy by Jamie Kirkpatrick, they struggle to keep an empire intact but cannot know the surprises that await them.

Flights of Angels is not only historical fiction but equal parts political thriller, love story, and fairy tale. Richly embroidered with lush imagery, spanning continents and vastly different cultures, this is an epic tale of country and the turnings of the human heart.

Beautifully told, engaging story <3

Matching the quality of Ms. Brandner’s storytelling with a voice particularly suited to the characters and moods, Gary Furlong’s audio presentation is varied and evocative. It is seamless when characters voices change as he effortlessly converses and narrates, or becomes mystical as suits the beauty of the storytelling from old Irish or Russian folktales or Jungian hero journeys that allow us inside a tortured mind. The magical wonder of ancient places and timelessness of a struggle for survival are beautifully felt as love manifests in so many ways.
As I will, I am sure, listen again and again, each time the depth of the story will reveal even more understanding of how well crafted and engaging it is, and how well suited a tale it is for such a telling!

Flights of Angels

The Exit Unicorns series is a wonderful historical fiction series set in Ireland during the time of the Troubles. I have read all the books and am anxiously awaiting the next installment. The narrator brings this book to life and I am thrilled with how his voice and his subtle interpretations of the characters invokes the richly varied landscapes that this particular novel leads the listener into. Yet again, I’m not ready to come back from the magical kingdom that Cindy Brandner has created with her words and that Gary Furlong has lent his voice to interpreting this story

A mult-layered tapestry

This is by far the most layered and complex of The Exit Unicorn series - stories within stories- all richly told in prose and translated into a verbal tapestry by the warm and compelling voice of Gary Furlong. We are left, as always, yearning for more.
Well done!

Pulls you in for an embrace to last a lifetime

This is such an incredible series. The character development makes me feel like I'm reading about dear friends. The historical context makes me feel as though I'm there, driving along back roads in a beast up Citroën praying there are no security checkpoints or gathered around a fire in the gulag to hear the end of the story that I've been waiting for weeks for.
I love the actor's voice, it's very natural even when he's portraying female characters. And who doesn't love that fabulous Irish lilt!

Epic storytelling! The narration is magical .

The next adventure with Cindy’s characters is epic. With each new book the narration gets more magical. The toothless elderly characters are hilarious. I love that it never feels like one person is playing every character. He does it with such ease and pizazz, or subtlety (whatever is needed) , especially when Jaime has his fever dream and the accents rapidly change. He’s on point! I love this story and can’t wait to see how it all plays out. I read this story first so hearing it as always reminds me of forgotten yet important details and turning points. The fairy house being one happy nougat! An Utterly fantastic and pleasant listen .

My favorite in the series

This was by far the best in the series. So much happening to our beloved Jamie, Pamela, Casey and Patrick. I'm not a literary critic but I read a ton of books. There have been so many times that I read a passage and wish I could read it to an expert just to say "isn't this incredible." We see and feel the effects of the troubles in Ireland and in this book the horrors of the Soviet Union prison, the expendability of people. The ugliness of greed and hate and then the beauty of human connections in the foulest of places. I love the fairy tales and the otherworldly connection that happened between Pamela and Jamie (and Casey was there too.) I think Gary is fabulous giving each character their own voice and accent. He does a great job. Waiting for In the Country of Shadows to become an Audible book. I of course have read all four and now have listened to them. Cannot wait for book 5.

Best One Yet!

Take a great story with awesome characters and mix it with a creative narrator and you’ve got a perfect audio book mix! I was waiting anxiously for this book to come out on audiobook as I couldn’t wait to hear the voices of the colorful, interesting characters from this story. It did not disappoint!!
