Publisher's summary

Journey deep into the Scottish Highlands in the first memoir by #1 New York Times bestselling author and star of Outlander, Sam Heughan—exploring his life and reflecting on the waypoints that define him

"I had to believe, because frankly, I had come so far there could be no turning back."

In this intimate journey of self-discovery, Sam sets out along Scotland's rugged ninety-six-mile West Highland Way to map out the moments that shaped his views on dreams and ambition, family, friendship, love, and life. The result is a love letter to the wild landscape that means so much to him, full of charming, funny, wise, and searching insights into the world through his eyes.

Waypoints is a deeply personal journey that reveals as much about Sam to himself as it does to his audiences.

Waypoints Sam Heughan.

Anyone who simply reads this book is missing out. This lovely story of life, perseverance, and self-understanding is so much better when read by Sam himself! This listener felt like I was having a personal conversation with Sam while making this 100 mile trek alongside him! He is very open and honest about his life. Hopefully I learned something about mine as well!

Makes me want to visit Scotland!

I was not expecting Sam Heughan to be so funny and self-deprecating; there were several times when I was just giggling. His description of the West Highland Way ALMOST motivates me to attempt the roughly 100-mile walk. I also enjoyed listening to his journey to what some may assume was over-night success. It is inspiring to hear a story of his perseverance in following his dream.

Amazing

I loved how he paralleled his life and journey with his walk along the west highland way. It was insightful and endearing to listen to the discoveries he made along the way. I was planning to read the book myself, but when I realized I could enjoy hearing Sam’s Scottish accent reading it to me, I jumped at the chance. Definitely check this one out!

So enjoyable

I will listen to this repeatedly I am sure. This was so enjoyable in its storytelling and gives a glimpse into his private journey chasing a dream and accomplishing goals. It’s so beautifully descriptive of the walk, it felt like I could see the views with him. Well done!

Great introspection

This book has it all and it keeps you wanting more. It’s written in a way that makes me feel like I’m taking a walk through the Scottish Highlands and talking with a friend. Some of the things made me think about us as a society and what pressure we put in those in the spotlight. Overall, a great read, or listen, and I recommend anyone to pick this up.

Sam Heughan does a wonderful job with the narration as he tells us his story. You will hear the Scottish are natural born story tellers and he proves this wonderfully. Thank you for sharing this memoir with the world.

A Heartwarming Journey

Sam Heughan takes us on a 96 mile hike and a climb up Ben Nevis in his Scottish Highlands adventure. Along the way he shares not only the journey’s waypoints but also those from his life, his struggles and successes! It made me laugh, cry, and feel anger on his behalf! It made me consider my own waypoints. It’s a treasure of a book and Sam’s delivery for the Audible version is fabulous! I’ll listen to this one again!

Waypoints

Sam Heughan’s Waypoints; My Scottish Journey, brings the reader into, not just the world of the starving, but epically talented actor and the road to his overwhelming success, it’s a tribute to the local beauty of this part of Scotland where he has made his home. Spectacular views and lovely descriptions of the natural surroundings and also some history into a few ancient man made wonders. Writer Sam Heughan takes on an extreme adventure alone and through this book gives rich descriptions of how the mind goes to all points along the way. Details of his childhood and tragic abandonment by his father are heartbreaking to read. Yet, he honors his mother in remarkable ways and says nothing to disregard his father. The quest to be an actor is surprisingly separate from his realization that because of his success he can actually fulfill his dreams of making the world a better place through his charities. In addition, throughout the book numbers of people, actors he knows or has worked with, the friends from school, fans and people he meets along the journey are spoken of in such a kind, generous manner that it makes you wish you could be one of them. All in all this is a gift from Sam, not an exploitation of Jamie Fraser. Most touching, a light but full read. In addition the audible is lovely, the special treats of quotes from poets and Shakespeare by Sam, himself, touch the heart.
