About this listen

Soon to be an original movie on Disney+. The beloved 2014 Newbery Medal winner by former National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature Kate DiCamillo.

Holy unanticipated occurrences!

It begins, as the best superhero stories do, with a tragic accident that has unexpected consequences. The squirrel never saw the vacuum cleaner coming, but self-described cynic Flora Belle Buckman, who has read every issue of the comic book Terrible Things Can Happen to You!, is the just the right person to step in and save him. What neither can predict is that Ulysses (the squirrel) has been born anew, with powers of strength, flight, and misspelled poetry - and that Flora will be changed too, as she discovers the possibility of hope and the promise of a capacious heart.

From number one New York Times best-selling author Kate DiCamillo comes a laugh-out-loud story filled with eccentric, endearing characters.

A chore to listen to the story and reader

My girls and I couldn’t get into this book. It was a chore to listen to the story with interest. The reader was a little annoying to listen to at times. I often had to think to myself, “okay what is happening here?” Often I had to rewind to recall what we missed because we lost interest in the story. Maybe we just couldn't get into this genre of fiction.

A Beautiful Story

We just love Kate DiCamillo’s stories. She is funny, quirky and amazingly profound. This story really moved my nine-year-old. She loved the details, like Ulysses’ little puffed out chest. And the big things, like the friendship & love between William Spiver & Flora. Just a lovely piece of work!

Every great story needs a squirrel

This is a wonderful story for kids or adults — or even better — a kid and parent together!

You need the book to follow along

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes- and no- This is a truly entertaining story. However, it is written and illustrated as a graphic novel. If you do not see the artwork and illustrations you miss a great deal of the story that is held not in the words but in the pictures.

What did you like best about this story?

The humor! This story is a riot. The little girls imagination is on fire and her stories and interactions are hilarious as a result.

What does Tara Sands bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She does a great job with the voices and impersonation of different characters. In particular she has a talent for dramatic pauses that I would not have used if reading it on my own.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It was on occasion laugh out loud funny. This was in part to listening to it in a car full of young boys.
