About this listen

Once more, bestselling author Joseph T. Klempner combines thrills, vivid characters, and a plot that leaves the listener breathless.

A Lincoln Navigator carries three well-dressed people through the barren New Jersey salt flats. The trip is uncomfortable but necessary. Their target has no phone, certainly no email, and never answers his mail. But August Jorgenson is no country bumpkin. Before retiring, he was one of the most famous judges in the country, and only opinions like his fierce opposition to the death penalty kept him from a seat on the Supreme Court.

Now his visitors, from a reality show called Trial TV, have come to enlist his aid. They are excited about an idea they have that promises to strike a serious blow against the death penalty (and boost their ratings past those of Court TV).

The judge agrees to help. But as he digs into the facts of the case he becomes their enemy - an enemy who must be removed as a serious threat to their plans.

When his first novel, Felony Murder, was published, Publishers Weekly called Klempner "a writer to watch." Now, Klempner is better than ever - that rare novelist with both an insider's knowledge of the world he writes about, and a talent for intelligent, compelling storytelling.

Well-written and well-performed. A bit wordy at times, and one plot twist was a little farfetched. Overall, however, highly recommended.

This story started slow and I had a hard time with the subject matter but I'm glad I stuck it out. Great story and narration.

Full disclosure, I knew the author when he practiced law, very well, in New York. This is not my favorite of his books but in all he painstakingly, accurately, and yet entertainingly describes the legal context - plainly not an easy task as comparison with works by other lawyer-authors plainly shows. I highly recommend him.

1. Sorry but I don’t think a person with a clear lisp should narrate an audiobook, unless perhaps it’s just for a particular character, which this good reader could do well. Instead, for example, the word ONCE became WONTH, no matter which character stated it. For me, that was distracting and diminished this interesting story.
2. Editor alert: I think you should have insisted on changing the guy’s mother’s name to something other than Hattie McDaniel, unless part of the story tied in a reason for using that famous name from the Gone With the Wind movie. It stopped me every time that name was mentioned.
Hope that advice is helpful, given without yet checking what others have said.

This is one of the best stories I’ve listened to in a good while. I enjoyed the plot, the characters and the performance by the narrator. I highly recommend this book.

A must listen!

Good book overall and pretty descriptive and felt like I was actually next to the people in the book. Some or a lot of people may be turned off by language used in this book, but I chalked it up to the times it was written for. Really good story overall and had me hooked but honestly felt really rushed at the end. First 3/4 of the book seemed set up pretty well but seemed like the author tried to do too much or wasn’t sure how to end it and what seemed to be the biggest part of the book fell flat. Could have tried to extend a few chapters or just changed the title of the book and taken out a few series of events all together.

I enjoyed “Fogbound” from start to unexpected ending. It’s taste of suspense as well as it’s moral lesson was unexpected but truly appreciated ?

Don’t give up!
