Where the fae and human realms meet…
Same old sleepy small-town France. I spend my days serving patisserie badly to the outlandish crowd at the café, and writing folklore research papers that will never, ever be published.
That’s until my clanger of a drunken hookup with the town’s hot new doctor, who turns into a hideous drac and eats Grampi’s favourite goat. Oh, and not to mention, a troop of ragtag fae storms my home, a fatal illness devastates the town, and a fae curse threatens Grampi’s life.
I may be having trouble accepting this new and delightful side of reality, but my knowledge of folklore means I have a shot at sorting this whole mess out before the town and everything I love is destroyed. The only thing is, I’ll have to work with the devious, scumbag doctor (he’s still picking goat out of his teeth). And he just might be the biggest challenge of all.
With flawed characters and strong emotional arcs, the Folkloric series weaves a beguiling hidden fae world with epic stakes, all the feels and delectable series-wide, slow-burn romance. The chosen one and the perfect hero were so traumatised by the goblins, they upped and left for another book.

I like this Audible book so much that I can't wait to start the next one. Narrator does such a good job of keeping you listening that you do not want to stop listening!
Great Story

I loved how Camille had spent her whole life researching folklore and myths but didn't actually believe in them. Her compassion and patience with Grampi were heartwarming, and I truly enjoyed how Grant made it so that he could only talk about his goats.
The D&D gang that hung out at the bakery was reminiscent of my teen years, except that I wasn't one of the girls taunting the "nerds"; I was one of the "nerds".
The way Fairy bordered our world and the travel through Fairy were set up splendidly. I especially enjoyed the rocks in Fairy.
I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a little mystery to go with their urban fantasy.

Camille is obsessed with folklore and hopes to publish a paper on it. For her research, she eagerly interviews locals for their stories, despite their belittling attitudes toward her. Of course she doesn't really believe that fae and the creatures in the folklore really exist. She finds out soon enough after a night of drinking and a one-night stand with the town's new doctor, Lucas... That one night opens her eyes to not just him, but to the world of fae that had been right under her nose her entire life!
She's catapulted into this world, a little disoriented, and has to adapt fast. Her grampi's life is endanger due to an unknown fae curse and she has to find the cure. Plus she's reluctantly tasked to become a Keeper of the boarderlands that lay between the human and fae realms... in partnership with Lucas, of course.
I decided to read the book while listening to it, which I think was ideal! This story is beautiful and well-written. Enjoyed the narrator, too. Love the world the author built with memorable characters (Mushum is just adorbs!) and fumbling heroic journey. I enjoyed it immensely and has to be one of my favorite fantasy reads/listens this year! Just got the audiobook for book 2, so am looking forward to seeing what's in store next!!!
FYI, this isn't really a romantasy. It's more of a fantasy adventure mystery. If you like Fantastical Beasts and Where to Find Them (J.K. Rowling 2016 film) you might like this book.
One of the best fantasy novels I had read this year!

This is a beautifully lyrical story about how an individual’s life changes when her passion encounters reality.
Camille is a young French woman who works in a cafe. Camille’s true passion is folklore, especially the folklore of her homeland. She devotes her free time to collecting authentic stories in the hope of one day publishing her work and making contributions to the relevant scholarship. She doesn’t believe that any of the folklore she collects is actually true, of course, but she deems its collection and recording to be fascinating and important. Unfortunately, too many of her town’s residents dismiss her efforts as irrelevant and don’t believe that they, or she, will amount to anything. On one particularly frustrating day, in search of a story that she’s heard snippets about, instead of hearing the details she seeks she meets with ridicule. Dejected by this episode she goes drinking, has a few too many, and then encounters the town’s new doctor (who is also inebriated), Lucas. Eventually they go to his home. The next morning Camille arises and drinks some tea that has been left by her bedside. And from that moment on, her understanding of reality and of her world is never the same.
I will not divulge any more details about this gorgeous story because I want the audiobook listeners to have the opportunity to revel in Camille’s and Lucas’s journeys and encounters, some wondrous and others extremely perilous.
The storyline of “Folkloric” weaves an extraordinarily immersive tapestry of a truly creative and internally consistent fantasy world. The characters are lovingly drawn and are entirely believable, engaging, and relatable. The tale flows from the first line through the very end and it captured my attention and interest so thoroughly that I eagerly awaited the entry into each succeeding chapter until I reached the end of the audiobook!
While this audiobook stands firmly in the realm of fantasy, the author also deftly intertwines elements of mystery (and the role playing game Dungeons and Dragons enters into the narrative occasionally).
The narrator is excellent and truly brings the characters and story to life!
All in all I loved this audiobook and look forward to the next audiobook in the series with great anticipation. If you are an avid listener to superb fantasy audiobooks, or to great fiction in general, then grab this title (or if you prefer reading to audio, get the book as it will be equally fabulous). I am thrilled to have found a new favorite author in Karenza Grant!
