About this listen

Gerald is only three years old when his mama leaves him alone in the house while she visits her drug dealer. He finds the hot thing she uses to light her cigarettes and in no time, the house is ablaze. Mama is sent to prison, and Gerald goes to live with his Aunt Queen. When he turns nine, Gerald unhappily learns that his mama is being released from jail and wants her son back. Suddenly, he must switch from a loving home to a household dominated by his abusive stepfather. When Gerald learns a terrible secret about his stepfather and the half-sister he has grown to love, he'll have to find the courage to do what's right. Author Sharon M. Draper, a National Teacher of the Year Award winner, tackles tough issues like physical and sexual child abuse. Thomas Penny's empathetic narration makes Forged by Fire and unforgettable listening experience.©1997 Sharon M. Great YA Read

This trilogy was highly recommended by some young adults. As an ELA teacher, I wanted to have an idea of thia writer's style. With 2 down and 2 to go, I am impressed. This book was typical but the first one had an unexpected twist!

Relatable

Needs different narrator to bring more realness to the characters. Felt kind of dull. Other than that it kept me wondering what was gonna happen.

A book I used to read when I was in middle school

I finally had the audacity to buy this audible. The reason is I have perfect memory to which I want to accomplish by reading books that I use to read when I was in middle school. This was one of them that I have read during middle school. I am currently in a university school and my gosh listening to this audiobook made me go to the past of middle school when I used to read a lot of books especially Sharon Draper books. I want to accomplish by reading the series of this book and as well copper sun. Also remind myself that I want to re-read my middle school books as I did when I first pick up these books. I just had that feeling to go to the past of my middle school.

The topic will hold me back from giving to kids

This book kept me reading just so I can figure out if the person got justice but I feel this book covers a lot of topics I wish my child never experiences. I also would be hesitant to give it to kids unless I know their parents have had certain conversation about safe touch.
