Publisher's summary

From the author of Parallel comes a high-stakes drama set in the near-future.

Fast-forward to a time when Apple and Google have been replaced by Gnosis, a monolith corporation that has developed the most life-changing technology to ever hit the market: Lux, an app that flawlessly optimizes decision-making for the best personal results. Just like everyone else, 16-year-old Rory Vaughn knows the key to a happy, healthy life is to follow what the app recommends. When she's accepted to the elite boarding school Theden Academy, her future happiness seems all the more assured. But once on campus, something feels wrong beneath the polished surface of her prestigious dream school. Then she meets North, a handsome townie who doesn't use Lux, and begins to fall for him and his outsider way of life. Soon, Rory is going her own way, questioning Lux and listening instead to the inner voice she's been taught to ignore-a choice that leads her to uncover a truth neither she nor the world ever saw coming.

Interesting take on technology rich society

This was a really creative and well thought out dystopian story that featured a lot of cool technology. The story had a lot of layers and plot twists, which kept the story moving really quickly and kept me interested. I enjoyed the characters and their dependence to the technology was a really creative and cool way to look at today's society and where we are headed. I received a copy of this title and chose to leave this review.

Hard to put down

I loved this book. I felt that I was walking right along with Rory(Aurora, main character). She’s a teen girl who is trying to understand why she’s hearing the “voice” again once she enters Theden academy. She goes on an amazing journey, and discovers a lot about who she is, and what happened to her mother, and then her biological father. It’s an amazing read!!

Must read. It deserves more than 5 stars

This is why reading among your backlist is so awesome. You never know what gems are hidden among your shelves! I thought I was done with dystopian novels, but I think that mostly applies to dystopian stories with a post-apocalyptic skew. Or, at the very least, that I'm still a fan of dystopian novels that read like thrillers with conspiracy theory plots.

Also, the ones that I like best are those that seem like they could really come to pass. People glued to their handheld devices? Check. Connectedness versus connection? Check. Powerful men wanting to play God? Always. Imagine that Apple decided to make all of our lives simpler by creating an app that makes our decisions for us, and you have the basic premise of this book. And you can also see how that company could become corrupt in a matter of no time, with such power.

I liked every twist and turn of this story, from "the Doubt" and its purpose to the Mohawk boy who avoided all current technology in favor of dinosaurs from a by-gone era to the prestigious "The den Academy" that the MC attends. As each thread unraveled, I was drawn further into the story, and just when I thought I had everything figured out, it all came crashing down.

Stories featuring tech like this that governs our daily lives always intrigue me. And while a decision-making app does sound appealing to some extent, I could never freely hand over my decision to remain free to fall.

Absolutely loved!!

I didn't really read anything about this book so I went in not knowing at all what to expect. The story kept going in directions that I didn't see coming and it was always exiting. Definitely built up throughout and had a very satisfying ending. I would highly recommend this.
