Publisher's summary

The propulsive, shockingly plausible sequel to New York Times best seller Daemon.

In one of the most buzzed-about debuts, Daniel Suarez introduced a terrifying vision of a new world order, controlled by the Daemon, an insidious computer program unleashed by a hi-tech wunderkind. Daemon captured the attention of the tech community, became a New York Times and Indie best seller, and left listeners hungry for more. Well, more is here, and it's even more gripping than its predecessor.

In the opening chapters of Freedom, the Daemon is firmly in control, using an expanded network of real-world, dispossessed darknet operatives to tear apart civilization and rebuild it anew. Soon civil war breaks out in the American Midwest, in a brutal wave of violence that becomes known as the Corn Rebellion. Former detective Pete Sebeck, now the Daemon's most powerful - though reluctant - operative, must lead a small band of enlightened humans toward a populist movement designed to protect the new world order. But the private armies of global business are preparing to crush the Daemon once and for all.

In a world of conflicted loyalties, rapidly diminishing human power, and the possibility that anyone can be a spy, what's at stake is nothing less than human freedom's last hope to survive the technology revolution.

Critic reviews

"Freedom™ surpasses its smart, exciting predecessor. This concluding volume crackles with electrifying action scenes and bristles with intriguing ideas about a frightening, near-future world. The two books combined form the cyberthriller against which all others will be measured.” (Publishers Weekly [starred review]

“Suarez continues his popular technothriller, and Daemon fans will be well be pleased with the exciting conclusion.” (Booklist)

"An engrossing, fast-paced tale of speculative fiction." (SF Site)

wow - a must read

Normally, I don't write reviews - But after listening to this and Daemon (which you must listen to Daemon first) - I'm convinced, Suarez is a great writer and Gruner is a great reader. This book is good for one that likes fast paced story telling. Even if you don't get allot of the technology (which I do) you will enjoy the story. To tell you how much you will actually WANT to follow the story, I completed this book in about 3 days (normally for a book this size it takes me about a week and a half). A great read, and a good one if you've got a long trip or vacation travel ahead. (NOTE: Daemon and Freedom(TM) are not really safe for children's ears - so headphones are probably a good idea)

Mesmerizing, interesting, terrifying

Who was your favorite character and why?

John Ross - his intellect

What does Jeff Gurner bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

OMG - I have never heard a better narrator. His characters were all so unique that is wasn't difficult knowing who was speaking.

Any additional comments?

Read Daemon first. Both books are terrific but they do not stand alone.

Great Unique book

What made the experience of listening to Freedom (TM) the most enjoyable?

Jeff Gurner does a great job bringing the characters to life in this story. More importantly Daniel Suarez is masterful and bridging feasible technology with social commentary. This book, even more then its prequel brings to life the theories expounded on in Economic Hitman and couples it with a behind the scenes look at how our current path could easily unfold.

Unlike most dystopian books Suarez weaves hope through his book, showing how the fringes of society can save us all, while wrapping the story in a great techno thriller.

What other book might you compare Freedom (TM) to and why?

It is unique. Some compare it to Ready Player and Zero day but I feel it is in its own league. I wish there were more like it.

Which character – as performed by Jeff Gurner – was your favorite?

Chunky Monkey

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

The first time yes pretty close to one sitting.

An even better sequel (is that possible?)

The author did it. I finished Daemon with the hanging ending thinking - this story is just getting bigger and bigger. I sure hope he can pull it all together. And he did - it was even better than the first. The reader again did a superb job, and completely brought me into the story.

At times the book risked getting a bit preachy, but kept the bullet train on track, hurtling towards a satisfying conclusion. The most "modern" book I've ever heard - not science fiction, but our modern digital reality.

Brilliant and fully recommended.

I really enjoyed this. You get to see the perspectives of all the sides involving the daemon, for or against. It definitely held my attention well.
