About this listen

Seeking refuge, determined to pull her life back together, Sabrina Swann returns to the sleepy Southern island of her childhood summers. The last person she expects to encounter there is Zach Tremayne, the boy who stole her heart when she was a girl. There’s a haunted look in his eyes that makes her wonder what kind of man he’s become. Zach can’t forget the horror he saw in his last battle in Afghanistan as a Navy SEAL.

Now home on Swann Island, he’s surprised to realize he can feel anything again, never mind the sudden surge of desire for this woman from his past. And when together they discover danger waiting in the island’s shadows, the woman who is desperate for peace and the man who has sworn off war will find that they are willing to do anything, risk everything, to protect a love neither saw coming....

Critic reviews

"...patented Ross storytelling; jam-packed with emotion, passion, and dark drama." (Romantic Times)

This is a story about a serial killer living on a small island somewhere in the South where a young woman named Sabrina returns to handle her inheritance after her grandmother's death. She becomes reacquainted with an ex-navy seal who grew up on the island and knew Sabrina from her childhood visits with her grandmother. A romance blossoms.

The writing mechanics were slightly above average; but, I am not fan of serial killer plots, so someone who is entertained by this type of story might rate this higher. I did not predict the ending, which was refreshing. The author did a nice job weaving the romance thread with the serial killer thread. There were a couple of other shorter threads as well, which worked well in keeping my interest.

The reader did a fine job - excellent with Southern accents. It was nice to have a competent reader.

Nice balance of intrigue, mystery, and romance all set in the historically rich South Carolina! JoAnn Ross has officially been added to my list of favorite authors.

The story is well written and has a good twist at the end. The lead male character is yummy. Narroration was well done. Most of the military references were correct.

Easy read
