About this listen

Lois Lowry’s Gathering Blue continues the quartet beginning with the quintessential dystopian novel, The Giver, followed by Messenger and Son.

Kira, an orphan with a twisted leg, lives in a world where the weak are cast aside. She fears for her future until she is spared by the all-powerful Council of Guardians. Kira is a gifted weaver and is given a task that no other community member can do. While her talent keeps her alive and brings certain privileges, Kira soon realizes she is surrounded by many mysteries and secrets. No one must know of her plans to uncover the truth about her world and see what places exist beyond.

Critic reviews

"Lowry returns to the metaphorical future world of her Newbery-winning The Giver to explore the notion of foul reality disguised as fair....Readers will find plenty of material for thought and discussion here....A top writer, in top form." ( Kirkus Reviews)
"Lowry has once again created a fully realized world full of drama, suspense, and even humor." ( School Library Journal)

Story: I forgot why I bought this book. Maybe I heard it was to be made into a movie. I hope so since it is a nice story about alternative future world. Interesting social dynamics when there is no existing clan or family relations for a single mother. I will make the time later to see the rest of the series and see how the story ends.

Reader: Very good.

Production: Very good.

Gathering Blue - Nice Story

So, far the books in this series are excellent. The first book, The Giver, was the best, but this second (completely separate story) book in the series carries on this authors imaginative work. For adults or for children, these books represent a rich set of moral guides in an America which seems to have so few in popular music, movies, or television. The themes of family values underpin these wonderful tales - much like Aesop's fables.

Warm, relaxing, memorable vibrant story

Story was well written and thought provoking, but the narrator was too monotone. Best read

Monotone Narration

If you enjoyed The Giver, you will love this story. The second book of the "quartet" but it could stand alone. Great job by the narrator as well.

Great listen!

The story is different than anything we deal with today but also jarringly familiar. People’s disregard for individuals with disabilities is reflected with such intention that you can feel each character’s pain. The reoccurring themes of hunger and childhood poverty rampantly demonstrate the cruelty lingering over this dystopia.

Cruelty that’s familiar

This is the second book in a series of three. Each can stand on their own. If you intend on reading all three you should read the first two first, but it wouldn't matter which one first. The Giver (book 1), Gathering Blue (book 2), Messenger (book 3). Definitely read Messenger last.
All the books are short and very interesting. She creates alternative societies in a different future. I thought this (gathering Blue) was the best of the three.

enjoyable
