About this listen
Researcher and author Michelle Serena tackles the controversial subject of transgenderism and gender dysphoria in her new audiobook, Gender Dysphoria. With all the recent information in the news on transgender people, this book comes at the right time. I Am Cait, the new show about the life of Caitlyn Jenner as she transitions into her new world separate from Bruce Jenner is a startling reminder that this dysphoria is real and that individuals who are going through this have options - and they can have bright lives in front of them when they find self-acceptance and a community of supportive friends.
Gender Dysphoria is not a comprehensive book nor a substitution for medical advice. It is a guide for family and friends who are curious about the subject and need to get a handle on what's going on with a loved one who is transgender. It's also a helpful book for school-aged people who may have to report on transgender studies or better understand their fellow students. The book helps the listener determine what transgenderism is, the possible biological reasons for it, possible treatments, and the various attributes of it.
Listeners will find useful information on the topic and hopefully receive the type of understanding that will enable the transgender people in their lives to have a point of departure for positive discussion. The book discusses male-to-female and female-to-male transitions and the hormonal and surgical options that many of them will undertake. It also goes into the risks associated with the various treatment options and for this reason is also a good resource for family members who have been asked to provide emotional support.

Story
Few topics are more contested today than gender identity. Complex issues like gender dysphoria are reduced to slogans and sound bites. And while the war rages over language, institutions, and political allegiances, transgender individuals are the ones who end up being the casualties. Mark Yarhouse, an expert in sexual identity and therapy, challenges the church to rise above the political hostilities and listen to people's stories. Yarhouse offers a Christian perspective on transgender issues that eschews simplistic answers and appreciates the psychological and theological complexity.

Your child has identified as nonbinary, and many parents won’t have had the first clue what was coming. You probably don’t know what to think or what to feel. You don’t know how to act, what you are supposed to do, or how to give your child the support they need. That’s why I wrote this guide for parents, a guide that you can refer to at any point during your journey when you are uncertain of what to do, how to feel, or when you just want to understand how someone else managed the situation.

Story
If you are transgendered, the feeling of wanting your body to match the sex you feel you are never goes away. For some, though, especially those who grew up before trans people were widely out and advocating for equality, these feelings were often compartmentalized and rarely acted upon. Now that gender reassignment has become much more commonplace, many of these people may feel increasing pressure to finally undergo the procedures they have always secretly wanted.

Story
When people are diagnosed with OCD, it doesn’t always come as a surprise. With others, it may be more of a shock. However, when we look at the symptoms and the influences that affect such people, it may not be any wonder that it is more prevalent than many have assumed it to be. OCD is a very real, common disorder that knows variations in severity and randomness. Some people are obsessed with cleaning, while others can’t stop double-checking locks, organizational spaces, or items.

Story
The Latin term for the female genitalia, pudendum, means “parts for which you should be ashamed”. Until 1651, ovaries were called female testicles. The fallopian tubes are named for a man. Named, claimed, and shamed: Welcome to the story of the female body, as penned by men. Today, a new generation of (mostly) women scientists is finally redrawing the map. With modern tools and fresh perspectives, they’re looking at the organs traditionally bound up in reproduction—the uterus, ovaries, vagina—and seeing within them a new biology of change and resilience.

Narration is monotone.
Narration was monotone and robotic. Because of that it was difficult to enjoy. Otherwise I liked it.
