Publisher's summary

Generation of Swine, the second volume of the legendary Dr. Hunter S. Thompson's best-selling Gonzo Papers, was first published in 1988 and is now back in print. Here, against a backdrop of late-night tattoo sessions and soldier-of-fortune trade shows, Dr. Thompson is at his apocalyptic best - covering emblematic events such as the 1987-88 presidential campaign, with Vice President George Bush, Sr., fighting for his life against Republican competitors like Alexander Haig, Pat Buchanan, and Pat Robertson; detailing the GOP's obsession with drugs and drug abuse; while at the same time capturing momentous social phenomena as they occurred, like the rise of cable, satellite TV, and CNN - 24 hours of mainline news. Showcasing his inimitable talent for social and political analysis, Generation of Swine is vintage Thompson - eerily prescient, incisive, and enduring.

Dr.Thompson at his best

These are a collection of essays from the San Francisco Examiner in the 1980's about sports, Iran Contra, politics and a variety of other topics. This is Hunter Thompson at the height of his powers and he does not disappoint. One cannot read or listen to his prose without stopping and laughing at various points. His ability to skewer the politician, the lawyer, the sports team or whomever is without parallel. Here is an example: "The whole Marine Corps should be disbanded, finished off with other useless relics like the Sea-Bees, Hitler Youth and the Lafayette Esquadrille...The U.S. Army's 1st Airborne Division could eat the whole Marine Corps for breakfast and take the rest of the day off for beer and volleyball." No one writes like that and this book is a testament to Dr. Thompson's extraordinary talents.

A classic Gonzo book

I've been a fan of HST for more than half my life and own the original print of this book. The narrator was clear, my only qualm was that he was too loud.

Always lived HST. The narrator is fantastic!

Narrator really brings the soul of Hunter to life! Great performance! Getting Hells Angels next!

Sowers is the best

The man was born to read Hunter Thompson. Perfect capture of his humor and gleeful hostility

Mostly ranting

If you really liked Hunter s Thompson you will like this book. He gets a bit depressing but it's interesting.

Great book and Narrator

This is classic Thompson you will love it if you love his writing and Scott Sowers with jump off the page - at first it seems a little much Sowers ranting and raging but stick with it I did and now I love his more unhinged narration

Gonzo Papers, vol 2

Any additional comments?

Scott Sowers' performance is great. It's not HST's voice at all, but it certainly adds to the experience. Again. It may come as a surprise, but Thompson was not a fan of the Reagan administration. If you haven't read HST, then this is not the place to start. Try Hell's Angels or Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas first. If you've gotten this far, you'll know what to expect.

Buy the ticket, take the ride.

Eye opening and disturbing

I had no idea Hunter was such a cutting and unforgiving author. I am truly impressed and will hear more of his work in the future. I wish we had his brand of open honesty and thinking in journalism today, it is sorely needed.

Written in caps!

Note to Scott Sowers, "Never start a performance at full voice, it leaves you nowhere else to go." Both Sowers and Thompson have one emotion, "SCREECH!" Yeah, I recall the guy who leaned from the window howling, "I'M MAD AS HELL AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!" Hunter Thompson can find only one key on the pad... the "!". Perhaps, way back then, it was unusual to read high-rant screed? Maybe it hadn't been done before? Anywayzzz... You want almost 13 hours of pointless self indulgence? Listen to this excruciating whine of an escape valve letting off pressure from Democrats out of power during the Reagan years. But why bother, just turn on MSNBC or open The Times any day during the reign of Trump.
