Publisher's summary

Decorated U.S. military veteran-turned-country musician Keni Thomas gives a personal account of his heart-wrenching experiences in the chaotic 1993 Battle of Mogadishu to express a unique set of leadership lessons and inspired view of our greater purpose. Get It On! reminds listeners "that we, as individuals, do indeed matter, that we are anything but ordinary, fully capable of carrying out life-changing assignments at any level and in any situation. We can make a difference in this world."

Carrying a guitar now rather than a rifle, Keni also shares stories from the stage of the Grand Ole Opry to overseas concerts for active soldiers, always passionate about the battle that "still shapes my thoughts on a daily basis" and eager to encourage the absolute best in those who are willing to answer whatever call God places on their lives.

Such a good story teller

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Get It On is inspiring on so many levels. Not only do you get a history and rundown of Task Force Ranger and their battle in Mogadishu, but the stories IN the stories are great. Keni tells them so well and you receive a gift of motivation with each one.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Get It On!?

"Hey Kid, join the Air Force!"

Which character – as performed by Keni Thomas – was your favorite?

Keni of course. I enjoy the way he portrays each individual in the book, but Keni himself is an all American guy that you want to be around and would want on any team you are a part of.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Keni met Leroy from the Tuskegee Airmen and was able to change his mind from feelings of guilt to a feeling of purpose for surviving the battle in Mogadishu.

Any additional comments?

Definitely read this. Or even better, listen to it as it is read by Keni himself. And then listen to it again.

DOWNLOAD IT NOW! Keni does a great job!

Would you listen to Get It On! again? Why?

I've listened to it at least 3 times and I read the hard back! Keni tells a great story and gives good advise about life and lessons he learned. Keni is a fantastic individual.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Well besides Keni, my favorite character in the book is David Floyd or maybe Melvin. Keni describes them both so well and they have big personalities. You can tell how much time he spent with these men by how he describes them.

Which character – as performed by Keni Thomas – was your favorite?

Probably Melvin Dejesus.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

GET IT ON!

Any additional comments?

Keni Thomas is a nashville country music singer, a former ranger from the battle of Mogadishu, he volunteers with USO, and is a christian. This is a great role model and someone to learn from. He gives a good account of his life's lessons in this book he learned from his time in the military but the story isn't like the blah military novels. He adds so much to the book to listen to him tell the story. He pays awesome tribute to the men of Task Force Ranger in this book while giving you nuggets that he took with him that he learned. I love this book and recommend it to pretty much anyone who will listen to me. You really feel like you get to know the author through this book.

Liking this so much I am happy to say when I bought the hardback copy of the book I wanted it autographed by Keni. When it didn't come after a couple of days I had emailed to see the status. His nice assistance told me Keni was on the road but when he came back he'd sign it. I figured it was autopen or something. He came back and not only did he sign it and send it to me, he emailed me himself apologizing for the delay. How many authors you know would do that?

GET THIS BOOK! YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.

Excellent book!

This book is an emotional experience in leadership and combat. It’s amazing that the narrative is done by the author. His personality is relatable and humorous but he’s professional and serious about his duty. He does an amazing job paying respect to his fallen comrades in telling their story. Excellent read! Highly recommend!

hilarious, realistic, humble, and due respect.

everything about this man makes me proud to have served my country alongside such men (my commander in basic was one of the men named during this book) and to b a christian warrior. he displays that christian doesnt mean ur on ur knees 24/7, it means everything and more of what he speaks about. we all have a role to play, its inspiring and fills me with hope that i might find my purpose as he has.

Inspiring!!!

Yes, Keni's recounting of his life in his own voice gives it the emotion and excitement not able to be captured in print.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Get It On!?

His involvement in the Blackhawk Down encounter.

What does Keni Thomas bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Personal experience, emotion and feeling of having been there.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

YES, having been an Airborne, Infantry Ranger and later a helicopter pilot this book hit home on WAY too many levels.

An eyewitness view of the Blackhawk down story

The way the author interspersed life lessons throughout the telling of his story was fantastic. Nobody but the author could have read this book as well as he did. As a former 2nd Batt Ranger (82-84) I found the author and his realistic story of survival fantastic. It really hit home for me since I could easily identify with every point the author was making. This should be mandatory reading by anyone who wants to serve in a Ranger Battalion. My only regret was not in reading it sooner....RLTW

A Gentleman, a Scholar, a Warrior

What did you love best about Get It On!?

I have never been able to understand how servicemen and women can go into battle and function with bullets flying all around them. In Get It On, Keni Thomas is able to explain this to me in an articulate and deeply moving manner. Soldiers can perform their duties under the worst conditions because they are not concentrating on their own survival alone, but on the men on their left and the men on their right. Mr. Thomas spoke at our Convocation event and I purchased his book and read it through in one day. When I got the email that an audio version was available, I purchased it immediately. It was everything I expected and so much more. You feel you know the men of whom he speaks. You can hear the noise of battle and almost smell the smoke. One of the best books I have read. Keni reiterates his belief that the battle of Mogadishu was not a defeat for the United States; it was a win for the men who fought so valiantly. The men who fought, the injured and the men who gave their lives were heroes. I also loved the way Keni bought in Bible verses to compliment the different scenarios. An amazing book and a wonderful audio version of it.

What other book might you compare Get It On! to and why?

I have not read other books such as Get It On previously, but I plan on reading several of the books he mentions that were written about the battle that came to be known as Black Hawk Down and the men who played an important part in it, such as the book Mike Durant wrote.

Which scene was your favorite?

There were so many, but I loved his introduction of his fellow squad mates and the section of the book about the Medic, the Machine Gunner and Other Angels of War. I really loved all of the book. There is humor and pathos.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The death of the Delta Force operators, Gary Gordon and Randy Shughart, who fought again incredible odds in holding off the Somali fighters and saved Mike Durant of Super 64 and when Keni learned about the death of his best friend, Casey Joyce.

Any additional comments?

This is a book that everyone should read. It makes you stop and think about the men and women of our armed services and the sacrifices that they and their families make for each of us.
