An (Almost) Excellent Introduction.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This book, and volume two, are very good for the newcomer to M.R. James's work. The only downside to this anthology is perhaps the fact some of his best stories are not included. I would have loved to have heard Jacobi's take on "Casting The Runes".

Derek Jakobi is the best part of this collection

I love British stories, especially Victorian-Era ones. Although ghost or horror stories are not my favorite genre, I do like a well-written tale (Dr. Jekyll, Dracula and the like). This first collection of M.T. James' work is entertaining, mostly due the exceptional narration by Derek Jacobi. The stories themselves are fine enough but not particularly scary or surprising. Overall the collection is an interesting look into the not too distant past.

A corker. Best heard before Christmas.

A defining performance by Sir Derek Jacobi. The stories themselves need no introduction and I’ve never tired of hearing or reading them again. And now for Volume 2 !

Classic ghost stories that hit the spot!

This is an excellent collection of M. R. James' ghost stories narrated by Derek Jacobi. Jacobi's soothing narration adds to the pleasure of listening to these stories. The stories in this volume are:
"A View from a Hill"
"Rats"
"The School Story"
"The Ash Tree"
"The Story of a Disappearance and an Appearance"

Very enjoyable, full of atmosphere

Derek Jacobi is the perfect narrator for these stories, imbuing them with the gothic spookiness we all love so much. I find some of the stories just too open ended, without enough content to tie together any real sense of what the heck happened; nonetheless they are extremely gratifying, particularly when listening as opposed to reading, giving the sense that you are actually present at one of James’ famous fireside holiday ghost story readings for a select small group of his students. Transported to another world and another time; that is what these stories and Jacobi’s excellent performance does for the listener. I love them

Love these old ghost stories and no one reads them better than Derek Jacobi. Looking forward to the next volume
