About this listen
‘I was asked the other day what I thought the hardest part of parenting was. I’d have to say that it’s definitely the kids.’
TikTok sensation Clara Batten has dedicated the last few years to seeking the answer to one of life’s most crucial questions:
Is it possible to raise and nurture two small humans without losing your bloody mind?
The good news is, now she’s found (some of) the answers and is sharing her secrets with the rest of us! In this riotous book, Clara reveals:
- when it’s acceptable to buy your kids lunch from a kebab shop.
- why a jar of pickled herrings from Waitrose is the ultimate guilty pleasure, nay necessity, for a sleep-deprived parent.
- how to finally pursue your acting ambitions in your forties (despite a toddler sh*tting on the stairs during a self-tape audition).
Most importantly, Clara shows us that no matter how much we adore our little treasures, life isn’t just about their A, B and bloody Cs.

Like most of us, Toni Lodge tells little white lies all the time. Whether it's "I'm five minutes away" or "It must have gone to my spam folder", most of these innocent fibs are harmless. But what if you realised that you weren't just lying about the little things, but the big "life" stuff too? When Toni sat down to write this memoir, she realized that the lies she was telling herself were hiding some pretty important home truths—about her work, her identity and her mental health. In her dogged pursuit of these truths, she brazenly explores everything.

But life hasn't always been a bundle of laughs. Urzila talks candidly about her childhood with a great family, apart from her abusive dad, and about growing up in South Africa.

Clara's sense of humor shines through!
I enjoy listening to a person who has that unique ability to not only be humorous in person but can capture that same humor in written word. Clara is one of those people. Thank you, Clara, for such an amusing few hours!

Mommy must read!
This is not normally a type of book I would read, I’m more of a fiction reader. But I highly recommend!

Do you need an awesome book to read? Well I've got one for you. "Gin and Phonics" by Clara Batten.
This is a great book, I loved it. It keeps your attention throughout. I bought the audiobook. The added bonus to this is, you get to hear all the nuances, you think you would hear in you mind, but from Clara herself. It's funny, sad, and thought provoking. It's like she's having a conversation with you over a cup of tea. You laugh, sniffle, think hmm and laugh some more.
People often ask others, "Have you any good book recommendations?"
I would reply, "Yes, 'Gin and Phonics' by Clara Batten. And if you get the audio she will read it to you. You'll love it."
Thank you Clara for writing this book. Plus doing the audio yourself, I know that's not easy, but it was enjoyable.
Recommendatio: Yes, Yes, and Yes.
