About this listen
Spirited and pretty, Anaxandra is playmate to King Nicandor’s crippled daughter, Callisto, until pirates attack Nicandor’s small Greek island kingdom and slay everyone except Anaxandra. When Sparta’s King Menalaus comes to investigate, Anaxandra assumes the identity of Princess Callisto to avoid becoming a slave. But Menalaus’ beautiful half-goddess wife, Helen, doubts the girl’s story. Worse, Helen is about to join forces with Trojan prince Paris. Now Anaxandra must reinvent herself in a desperate attempt to prevent war.

Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Story
Greek myths were full of powerful witches, unpredictable gods and sword-wielding slayers. They were also extreme: about families who turn murderously on each other; impossible tasks set by cruel kings; love that goes wrong; wars and journeys and terrible loss. There was magic, there was shape-shifting, there were monsters, there were descents to the land of the dead. Humans and immortals inhabited the same world, which was sometimes perilous, sometimes exciting.

Story
Alexander's beauty, strength and defiance were apparent from birth, but his boyhood honed those gifts into the makings of a king. His mother, Olympias, and his father, King Philip of Macedon, fought each other for their son's loyalty, teaching Alexander politics and vengeance from the cradle. His love for the youth Hephaistion taught him trust, while Aristotle's tutoring provoked his mind and Homer's Iliad fuelled his aspirations.

One Girl's Courage in the Era of Myth and Antiquity
I generally enjoy fiction that places real characters within a mythological framework. This novel is definitely an adventure, but the violence and traumatic events left me feeling disturbed and hopeless -- despite the potential promise of the very last five minutes. As a child I believed that humanity in general was capable of evolving beyond self-interest, greed, and horrific violence, but unfortunately the longer I live and the more I learn, I think compassion, foresight, generosity, and resourcefulness are increasingly rare characteristics (with eight billion people on Earth). While I admired the protagonist's spirited persistence, her life losses felt almost unbearable...much too real in our current culture of obsessive selfishness and endless violence. I almost quit listening; but hung on until the little bit of light at the very end.
