About this listen

The tough neighborhood of Dorchester is no place for the innocent or the weak. A territory defined by hard heads and even harder luck, its streets are littered with the detritus of broken families, hearts, dreams. Now, one of its youngest is missing. Private investigators Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro don't want the case. But after pleas from the child's aunt, they open an investigation that will ultimately risk everything - their relationship, their sanity, and even their lives - to find a little girl-lost.

A Literary Thriller

Any additional comments?

I really liked this book and could not stop listening. Lehane writes genre fiction like fine literature (as does James Lee Burke, although their styles are completely different).Lehane's plots get complex and take some concentration in the last third, but they are always excellent. Great narrator as well.

Great, but a tough story.

This was a fantastic story. Very difficult, especially the ending, really leaves you thinking what the "right choice is."

The best Gennaro novel

Would you listen to Gone, Baby, Gone again? Why?

Yes - I think there are some clues in the narrative that I could have picked up on second listen

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes - many twists and turns

What does Jonathan Davis bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Great job of characterization of the different personalities

Any additional comments?

I do not like the Gennaro novels. I like Lehane very much - but find the Gennaro novels silly. This is a great action/crime novel that just happens to have them in it. Also, Lehane doesn't write women all that well.

Haunting

Great story! Fast paced, great narration. It makes you question right vs wrong. This is one of the few books I have ever given 5 stars to. I may consider reading the rest of this series. The movie is equally as good and definitely did the book justice!

Outstanding narration and storytelling

The story was delivered beautifully by the narrator, and the plot itself was a masterpiece. I couldn’t figure it out until the very end, and then they tied it all together. WOW! Just, wow

Riveting

Dennis Lehane’s best book I’ve listened to. Brilliant narration by Jonathan Davis. Emotionally wrenching, as gritty as it comes, yet written with astonishing sensitivity and intelligence. Protagonists Angie & Patrick are smart, honest, big-hearted, tough and unsentimental. They are humane, sane characters in an inhuman, insane world. Lehane’s characters snd plots are as complex and surprising as Graham Greene’s (high praise indeed!) In fact, Lehane has many Greene’s brilliant qualities, but lean economic writing is not one of them - at least so far; I began reading his books in order from the beginning. This book sticks to the story far better than others. He’s still a relatively young writer- compared to Greene anyway (Greene wrote critically acclaimed best sellers for sixty some years of the 20th century. I’d like to think that Mr. Lehane will follow in Graham Greene’s path to a long and distinguished career.

Wow

All the books in this series are great but this one takes it to a new level! Gone baby gone is maybe his greatest one so far and a powerful statement to society.

Good

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No

Any additional comments?

About the middle 1/3 of the book is just atmosphere filler. It could easily be deleted
