About this listen

Can love find a way to overcome hate? A historical drama set against the backdrop of World War Two.

Can love find a way to overcome hate?

When Frankie’s mother dies, she is sent to live with her Aunt Bet in the countryside. Life on their farm is happy – for a while. But when World War Two breaks out, Frankie must help her country by signing up to the women’s branch of the British Army.

Soon, she meets Romare, an American doctor who has come to the UK after facing terrible racism at home. But trouble is stirring in Britain too, and Frankie must prepare for heartbreak. Can love triumph over a history of hate? Or will Frankie and Romare’s love pay the ultimate sacrifice?

An emotional, thought-provoking story that brings to life World War Two.

Touching and thought provoking

I have enjoyed all of Pam Weaver's books to date. She writes of ordinary young women who rise to the occasion. This book deals with the sad state of racial tensions during World War II. Many if not all Brits accepted the black soldiers from the U.S. However, when racist, bigoted soldiers, some of rank are stationed near black soldiers, it is not a pretty site. Frankie meets a black doctor serving in the U.K. and they are immediately attracted. She experiences the brutality of a truly evil white officer. I don't want to give the story away, but parts are heartbreaking. Yet, there is justice of a sort in the end. I have only seen this topic in fiction from one other author: Nevil Shute in his book The Chequerboard, also a fascinating and powerful book. The narrator of this book was quite good, but I love Julie Masey, who read the last book of Weaver's I purchased. This is worth a listen expecially if you are a fan of WWII homefront fiction and enjoy strong, resilient women.

And story continues today

This is an excellent book of historical fiction. All the characters except one are fictional. The subject was true then as it is now.
Highly recommended!
