About this listen

Saints are real people who have encountered the same setbacks, struggles, and failures that confront each of us. Join esteemed Church historian Father John Hughes to learn more about the very real lives of your favorite saints.

Along the way, you will learn the answers to questions such as Why do we have saints? Who are the saints and how does one become a saint? Why are so many of the saints former priests, nuns, or monks? and Why are so few saints married? Gain clarity and insight into an area of common misconception: what it really means to pray to the saints.

In this fascinating series, the saints you’ll meet include a woman who didn't discover her true vocation until she was past sixty, a man who lived for years with a concubine and fathered an illegitimate son, a religious teacher and reformer who was repeatedly charged with heresy, three women who were wives and mothers before they became Sisters, and many more.

The words of these great men and women may move you, but their actions will absolutely take your breath away. Join Fr. Hughes as he fondly recalls the memories of some of our greatest Saints, including the pope who, as he lay dying, told his priest-secretary: “We never stopped to throw back the stones they cast at us."

Historical Account of the Saints

There are so many Saints that it would be unrealistic to try to consider them all in one book. The historical account was covered well in the time allotted. I would have enjoyed learning more about their stories. The reading had several flaws that would have been easy to detect with proofreading (listening). Transitions did not seem smooth and only near the end was it evident that the book was covering Saints in chronological order of their time period. I give the book perfect marks for the overall for the coverage but it was not as interesting or inspiring as I would have preferred. Maybe the critical part of my review is an indictment of my need for entertainment and I believe most listeners will thoroughly enjoy the book.

Outstanding presentation with fresh insights

This series is an outstanding introduction to the lives of Christianity's great saints. The presenter really knows his stuff - earned a doctorate in theology studying with Pope Benedict (when the pope was a professor). But Fr. Hughes is also a skilled homilist who makes each story come alive. I especially like the vivid anecdotes, the little stories that provide a glimpse into the true character of each saint. You will love listening and learn a great deal.
