About this listen
For 21 years, the Green River Killer carried out his self-described "career" as a killing machine, ridding the world of women he considered evil. His eerie ability to lure his victims to their deaths and hide their bodies made him far more dangerous than any infamous multiple murderer in the annals of crime.
A few men eventually emerged as the prime suspects among an unprecedented 40,000 scrutinized by the Green River Task Force. Still, there was no physical evidence linking any of them to the murders until 2001, when investigators used a new DNA process on a saliva sample they had preserved since 1987, with stunning results.
Green River, Running Red is a harrowing account of a modern monster, a killer who walked among us undetected. It is also the story of his quarry of who these young women were and who they might have become. A chilling look at the darkest side of human nature, this is the most important and most personal audiobook of Ann Rule's long career.

Story
Ann Rule was working on the biggest story of her career, tracking the trail of victims left by a brutal serial killer. Little did this future best-selling author know that the savage slayer she was hunting was the young man she counted among her closest friends. Everyone's picture of a natural winner, Ted Bundy was a bright, charming, and handsome man with a promising future as an attorney. But on January 24, 1989 Bundy was executed for the murders of three young women - and had confessed to taking the lives of at least thirty-five more women from coast to coast.

But he wanted more than just sex. An appetite for unspeakable violent acts led him to cruise the I-5 highway through California to Washington, leaving a trail of victims along the way. After his first grisly crime, Harvey Louis Carignan beat a death sentence and continued to manipulate, rape, and bludgeon women to death - using want ads to lure his young female victims. And time after time, justice was thwarted by a killer whose twisted legal genius was matched only by his sick savagery. Here, complete with the testimony of women who suffered his unspeakable sexual abuses and barely escaped with their lives and of the police who at last put him behind bars, is one of the most shattering and thought-provoking true-crime stories of our time.

Story
"A Rose for Her Grave" - the principal story of this collection - vividly recreates the cautionary tale of Randy Roth, a misogynistic sociopath from the Pacific Northwest whose rage was directed primarily at women and children. Addicted to his own greed, Roth exercised a powerful aura of control over his victims, using his ability to charm and boyish good looks to lower their defenses. By the time they saw the reality of the madness in his eyes, it was usually too late.

Story
One wintery night on tiny, quiet Whidbey Island off the coast of Washington, Russ Douglas spent Christmas with his estranged wife, Brenna. He left Brenna Douglas's home in Langley on the morning of December 26, 2003 to run some errands. He didn't return - dead of gunshot to the head. The suspects included an aging beauty queen, her guitar-teacher lover, and Russell's widow, Brenna. With her trademark aplomb, Ann Rule unravels the fascinating story of a murder, a small town, and a number of potential killers.

On a snowy winter evening in 1982, 21-year-old Mary Brown accepted a ride from a handsome stranger in the resort town of Breckenridge, Colorado. The trip ended with her brutally beaten and raped. Mary survived, but her predator's violence had only just begun. After 10 years in prison, Tom Luther was released a far more vicious criminal. Soon, from the Rockies to West Virginia, like Ted Bundy, Luther enticed a chain of women into his murderous trap.

Critic reviews
"Rule once again validates her standing as one of the pre-eminent chroniclers of modern serial murder....Perhaps her greatest achievement is bringing Ridgeway's victims to life as distinct individuals." (Publishers Weekly)
"Interweaving her individual profiles of the murdered women with the story of Ridgway and the officials who caught him, Rule gives full, heartbreaking emotional weight to what America's most notorious serial killer truly wrought." (Booklist)

Story
Rachel Newhouse disappeared on the night of November 12, 1998. Only months later, in the same town, Aundria Crawford lost her life in an act of unimaginable violence. As authorities worked to find clues, parole officer David Zaragoza paid a routine visit to one of his charges - Rex Allan Krebs, a violent serial rapist who'd served only 10 years of a 20-year sentence. After sending Krebs back to jail for violating his parole, Zaragoza found a key chain belonging to one of the victims. An intensive search led to the gruesome discovery of buried remains near Krebs' secluded cabin.

Story
In this fascinating, in-depth account of the hunt for serial killers, Colin Wilson, one of the world's leading authorities on the subject, examines the ways they can be tracked down and caught, from the tried-and-true methods of the early 20th century to the high-tech processes in use today. Wilson examines such areas as psychological profiling, genetic fingerprinting, and the launch of the Behavioral Science Unit. He delves into the importance of fantasy to serial killers, the urge to keep on killing, the desire to become notorious, and murder as an addictive drug.

Like a car crash, gruesome, but u can't look away!
This was a well read and interesting audiobook. Having known nothing about the Green River Killer, it was very interesting! The style of unfurling who the killer was before and during his crimes was very good at getting 'into his head'.

Boring
This was my first Ann Rule book. This book had no heart and the narration was lackluster to say the least. I will admit that I generally shy away from female narrated books because they are so boring and they don’t draw me in like other narrators do such as Kevin Pierce. Unfortunately this will be my last Ann Rule book.

Abridged
Would you consider the audio edition of Green River, Running Red to be better than the print version?
This isn't the book in its entirety and I'm seriously disappointed. The book is huge and I read it a few years ago. I wanted to hear it instead of reading it a second time and five hours is way too short.
What did you like best about this story?
Despite the short length, excellent coverage of the victims and a good summary of the murderer.
What about Michele Pawk’s performance did you like?
Ms Pawk's performance was excellent. I could easily see Ann dictating this.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I'd planned on listening to this all in one sitting.
Any additional comments?
Overall, I'd recommend this, but you need to understand that it's the abridged version. :( It was nearly as disappointing as John Douglas' Manhunter, which was extremely abridged.

Not the whole book
this is my first book on here and I didn't realize there were abridged versions, there are really people out there who just want part of books? so now I've listened to this and wasted my credit. I don't really wanna purchase the full book or waste my next credit to get the full work and have to piece together around the 5 hours I've already heard of the full 19. very frustrating, thinking about just deleting this app now.

I really enjoyed this audiobock. I have always read Rule's books and was not sure if I would like them in audio, but it was easy to keep track of the characters, and the story is, as usual, chilling and compelling. I would recommend this to any fan of true crime stories.
