About this listen

This New York Times best seller and shocking “tour de force from America’s best true crime writer” (Kirkus Reviews) - which formed the basis for the Lifetime movie event A House on Fire - follows a woman whose seemingly perfect life hides a destructive madness.

In this harrowing New York Times best seller, Ann Rule is at her masterful best as she winnows horrific truths from the ashes of what seemed like paradise in Prairie Village, Kansas. Rule probes the case of Debora Green, a doctor and a loving mother who seemed to epitomize the dreams of the American heartland. A small-town girl with a genius IQ, she achieved an enviable life: her own medical practice, a handsome physician husband, three perfect children, and an opulent home in an exclusive Kansas City suburb. But when a raging fire destroyed that home and took two lives, the trail of clues led investigators to a stunning conclusion. Piece by piece, Ann Rule digs beneath this placid Midwestern facade to unveil a disturbing portrait of strangely troubled marriages, infidelity, desperation, suicide, and escalating acts of revenge that forever changed dozens of lives.

As always, Ann Rule covers a murder case with such insight and heart--well written and well researched. Hers' are the best! I wasn't sure if I liked the narration at first but the narrator won me over!

Very well written and narrated. As always Ann Rule does such an amazing job of having her stories flow in a perfect telling way. Heartbreaking to think how some ppl are so hateful and self-centered they would go to any lengths for revenge! Wow!

What a completely evil woman!

Excellent writing, excellent narration. Deb is one of the most disturbed individuals I think I've ever read about, and yet Ann still manages to write about her compassionately and humanely - while still holding her accountable for her crimes.

Ann Rule is classic.

Small Sacrifices is my all-time favorite true crime book and it is Ann Rule's magnum opus. However, this one definitely has to come in second. I was engrossed until the very end. I remember the case from the news but this book adds so much to the account of the deaths by fire of the children of Dr. Deborah Green. Don't miss it!

The Crime Queen!

Love Ann Rule! She never disappoints as to how she writes the truth about Criminal behaviors and the details of their crimes.

Cassandra Campbell, without intention, almost steals the show from Ann Rule's solid and poignant writing. Her steady, clear voice narrates this gripping true story and subtly highlights direct quotes with inflections appropriate to, and distinctive for, each person quoted. I am beyond impressed with her performance. I've already chosen the next book to enjoy, and it will once again be the inimitable team of Rule and Campbell.

Engaging writing, stellar narration
