Publisher's summary

Just once, Nyx Fortuna would like something in her life to be easy . . .

Nyx has finally managed to dismantle the magic keeping her from her missing memories, but things are a bit . . . fractured. Her mind keeps slipping into different points in her past, and she's not always aware of when the present is.

The issue couldn't have come at a worse time, because she finally has a lead on the Kumir—the race of identical assassins who have hunted the Hidden to the brink of extinction—but following that lead involves another interstellar trip. Recognizing that covert operations on a foreign planet aren't a good idea with her current problems, Nyx reluctantly agrees to let her friends go without her.

But when a malfunctioning memory combines with an unintended use of portal magic, Nyx ends up right where she shouldn't be. Complications prevent her from returning to Earth, leaving Nyx to navigate an alien metropolis while hoping her skipping memory doesn't get her killed.

Two things in this book really bothered me.

I did enjoy the book, and i found it quite good overall. However, there were two things that i found that kept tripping me up when later thinking about the story.

MAJOR SPOILErS

1. Nyx's treatment of Jevren. I get that she had a bad childhood, and finding out your father really is the dreamed for rich and powerful individual who really could have taken you away from all of it , would be quite devastating. That said, i really can't agree that a rape victim has ANY obligation towards a child that was created from sexual assault. It feels just plain WRONG that this story even implied that he owed her anything. I could wax all day about how much i dislike the idea that rape victims are morally obligated to care for their children, but it would just be different versions of the word gross. No Nyx didn't deserve what happened to her, but i don't think Jevren bares any responsibility for it either.
2. Nyx's treatment of Ellena. So are we actually just going to treat Ellena like she is only a Toxic person that Nyx needed to finally cut out of her life? The woman isn't toxic, she is a MONSTER who raped, enslaved, murdered and abused children. I get trying to be the better person, but letting her walk off with little more than a bruise and a couple sic burns just feels down right irresponsible. The woman belongs in a shallow grave or at the very least a prison cell. I don't know i just kind of felt like that in this one instance the main character was fully justified in dishing out some well earned revenge. I do hope that in future books we can see some just deserts being served up.
So yeah those are my two gripes. As i said at the beginning i did enjoy the story, and will definitely being getting the next one. Just spent a little to long in the shower thinking about certain scenes in the story after i finished it.
