About this listen

Stella won't give up, but she doesn't know how to go on.

Stella North, a rising star in the police, has her life torn apart by a gunman's bullets. She has often faced danger, but these injuries mean she must give up the job she loves. Her grandmother Beth is her rock. And Beth is no ordinary woman. At 70, she runs marathons and has a past that Stella knows very little about.

Beth calls in her friend, Michael, to help with Stella's recovery. But this man means a lot more to Beth than she reveals. And Stella's ex-husband, Edward, and old police partner, Robbie, want to help, but Stella puts up emotional barriers, and they have problems of their own. Her old friends from her days of Urbex (exploring old abandoned buildings) offer a glimmer of hope for the future.

GUIDE STAR is a different novel by Joy Ellis. It's not a mystery/suspense thriller, not at all. If that is what you want this novel will disappoint. It is a novel about not giving up even when the odds are stacked against you. British actress Shiromi Arserio does a wonderful job of narration.

I really enjoy Joy Ellis mystery/detective series, this book was so much more of a romance novel that it was not as interesting as others.

Not my favorite

I love her character development and rich descriptions. This book had less action than some of her others and I still loved it.

Joy Ellis is wonderful.

Loved the narrator who wove a basket containing complicated lives and emotions. The story was human and full of flaws. How good it felt to be able to share a happy ending. Resolve to move forward and live in the present is to be admired.

Charming.

Compelling with excellent character development. Story touched on realities of the consequences of gunshot wounds, and of lost and complicated loves, while being an enjoyable listen. Ms. Ellis is a master storyteller.

Touch of Reality.

I’ve loved all of Joy Ellis’ novels I’ve read so far & here again she’s chosen the perfect narrator for this simple love story. I like that fact that she writes about adult themes without including all the smutty details many authors seem compelled to include in over abundance. I also liked the inclusion of characters from previous books (Jackman & Marie etc) & the whole Urban Exploration experience. Definitely a pleasant read overall, narrated perfectly I felt.

Wonderfully narrated!

I’ve been looking for my “Guide Star” since I had surgery for Chronic Subdural Hematoma a year and a half ago. When I woke up in the hospital I felt good and was aware aware. On day three a doctor’s assistant asked me I wanted to go home early, yes I said, but why. She told meet that I was one of the lucky ones, most CHS patients die or are paralyzed for the rest of their life.

This book helped me to see the importance of taking
control of my changed life and the need for professional help that will hopefully teach me how to regain a normal life.

I am a 77 year old woman, have had four concussions, 4 broken ribs, a broke wrist, one terrible accident with a semi-truck, and had a career in viticulture and farming for 40+ years. I don’t regret any of it.

To find happiness we need to follow our hearts, even when we’re thrown difficult challenges.

Help for finding my way

I absolutely loved this book! Knowing some of the characters already from another series, I loved the back story. Although this book was a slower pace from most of the author’s other books I felt it was perfect for the content of the story. I loved the narrator, too!

Wonderful!
