About this listen

The end of the world is the weirdest time to come of age.

Welcome to the end of the world. One minute, people are going about their lives, and the next—not. In the wake of the inexplicable purge, only a handful of young misfits remains.

When it all went down, “Wizard of Odd” Dev Brinkman was seeking shelter from the taunts of his classmates. Goth girl Lucy Abernathy had lost her best friend and had no clue where to turn. And Twinkie-loving quarterback “Marcus” Haddad was learning why you never discuss politics and religion in polite company—or online.

As if life when you’re sixteen isn’t confusing enough, throw in the challenges of postapocalyptic subsistence, a case of survivor’s guilt turned up to seven billion, and the small task of rebuilding humankind…

No one said doomsday would be a breeze. But for Dev, Lucy, and Marcus, the greatest hope—and greatest threat—will come when they find each other.

Lucy is the worst.

I could tolerate the obvious wokeism peppered throughout the story, the horrible performance from the narrator, who'd switch between east coast and southern accents like they're somehow "the same", and even the excessive amounts of pauses written during conversations. But what I couldn't stand was Lucy's character. Her aggressive and selfish nature, the hypocrisy of wanting and essentially getting an abortion she apparently "needed", only then after to literally be forcing a kid she just met weeks later to sire a child with her, whether he wanted to or not, then using that forced pregnancy as a weapon to act like an insufferable bitch was all a bit too much. The threats of violence doled out if she wasn't catered to, the assumption that since she was a female she was always right and the poor men who had to deal with it all, or else. Lucy is just the worst kind of female character, and it's somehow made worse by her being described as a fat and ugly, angry goth chick, like apparently those are the only types of goth chicks to ever exist, and so somehow her actions are all justifiably ok. 🙄 Ugh. Everything in this story is just so fucking cliché I just can't even...

For what it was, the story was ok. I just wish the time allocated to certain events and things were divided up properly. It took 75% of the book just to have the 3 kids meet, and once they did, the rest of the plot points blew past so quickly and were glossed over like it's no big deal. I'm still left with many questions and only a little closure, if you could even call it that. I've def read much worse, but this could've been so much better if the author had a little help and better feedback.

Great story!

Great book. Leaves you hoping for a sequel. Author seems to push a little left wing agenda inside but it's easy enough to blow off.

Don't Understand The Negative Reviews

A very pragmatic and down to earth showing human of nature if something unrealistic and completely unexpected happened to wipe out the majority of humanity leaving only a few scattered souls behind. I loved the ending and the performance given by Lauren Ezzo was wonderful. I hope to come across more books narrated by her in the future. That behind said this kind of story isn't for everyone but I definitely recommend it to those who don't mind the apocalyptic/ post-apocalyptic genre.

Don’t be fooled by the happy cover

I bought this book because the cover looked like it was going to be s humorous story. I was fooled. So iff you are bummed out this is not the book for you.Be warned that if you don’t like it when everything hoes bad, this is not the book for you. However, the story was very intriguing and I really wanted to find out what happens to the characters.
The narrator was very good and did a great job differentiating the characters voices. Even including a great southern accent.

an enjoyable listen, even with many Loose Ends not

no real climax to speak of, but a well-rounded, enjoyable listen. curious to see if there will be a sequel.

Great read

I really enjoyed this book. Perhaps it’s because of the condition we find ourselves in, but it was a somewhat light-hearted look at the end of the world. Dev is my favorite character, and I think anyone else invested in the story will find him endearing and persistent in everything he does.
