Critic reviews

"In the 1870s, former Texas Ranger Andy Pickard, now a restless farmer, drops his plow and straps on his guns when the local sheriff is murdered during a jailbreak. The dead sheriff, Tom Blessing, had been a father figure to Andy, who vows revenge for his killing. The escaped outlaw is Luther Cordell, a dangerous bank robber and leader of a small gang of desperate owlhoots. The search is long and arduous, and the posse Andy has assembled melts away until only Andy, now a fully reinstated Ranger, remains in solo pursuit. Cordell, meanwhile, is trying to recover the stolen bank loot he'd hidden when captured. Add in Cordell's disgusting relatives, two unlucky saloon stick-up artists, some kindly travelers, fancy gunplay and a remarkably surprising conclusion, and Kelton once again turns in an exciting and satisfying western tale." ( Publishers Weekly)
"An engrossing, entertaining chase [that] will likely further enhance Elmer Kelton's hard-earned reputation." ( Dallas Morning News)

Great story,,,best yet,,,a western that I can beli

I lived in San Antone,,,,about 12 years,,,,,trained show horses,,been in all those little towns,,( Keerville,,,Beeville,,etc.),,,loved the background of this story ,,San Antone still has the high sides,,,to the sidewalks
ones that are on the back streets,,,,this is a true story,,,hits your heart right away,,,, Elmer & Jonathan. They carry these true life stories,,, so real,,,even to 3 pats to a good mustang,,,,,, no Spanish hits
I keep these stories,,,they make me smile,,,,and remember the warm welcome days,,,,thanks

A Western Masterpiece

A breathtaking chase with all the characters a great Western needs – outlaws, the brave lawmen, funny old men, a drunkard or 2, charming ladies – yet none of them is a stereotype. A thrilling story with a lot of action but also attention to the psychological and emotional side of characters, and an unpredictable plot.

Another Great Elmer. Kellton Western

This is the eighth of Elmer Kelton's western novels I've enjoyed listening to as an audio book. Each has provided a different adventurous tale featuring. a new and original "good guy", a " bad guy", and some interesting supporting characters. Working through adversity and a series of crisis, each of his stories concludes on a positive note. Jonathon Davis' narration was flawless and a pleasure to listen to. Hard Trail to Follow won't disappoint.
