About this listen

At a dinner party in London during the season, Fitzwilliam Darcy meets an enchanting young woman. Though he recognizes her beauty and poise, he is struck by a sense of familiarity and realizes she is someone connected to him.

What follows is a whirlwind of events in which the woman's lineage is discovered and her true identity is established. Darcy quickly realizes she is a woman estimable in her own right, and he finds himself besotted.

But amid the miraculous events of a lost soul returning home, dark forces conspire against the young woman, for her loss was not an accident. And so it is that a man is moved to action by a boon long denied, determined to avoid being cheated by Miss Elizabeth Bennet again.

Excellent performance by Harry Frost

Although I saw places where the story could have been abbreviated and falls far from canon, this was a very enjoyable listen. A gentle story of Elizabeth finding she is not a Bennet by birth. Mr. Darcy spots her at a party and sets in motion her meeting with her biological family which elevates her substantially. The greatest compliment I can give a performer is to say I forgot there was only one person I was listening to, as it sounded like a full cast. Excellent!

Great presentation

A great performance by Mr Frost, my go-to narrator for books. I have read the book a couple of times and found it dragged in places. However, listening to it helped tremendously especially given how talented the narrator is with voicing different characters. It did not seem to lose steam at the three quarter mark as it did when reading the book.
Highly recommend.

Excellent narration of an entertaining read

I enjoy most of Jan Rowlands books, and this is my 3d 'read' of this one. it only gets better each time.

Darcy as Prince Charming

Out of Obscurity wins a high mark from me as one of the most entertaining of Mr. Rowland’s P&P variations. Why? Because for me it unites the characters from Jane Austen’s most famous novel with my favorite version of Cinderella. Prince Charming (and his cousins), fairy godmothers, ugly step sisters, a fairy princess gown and danger lurking are all present in this “if Elizabeth wasn’t a Bennet” themed story. And the other accolade goes to Mr. Frost for his excellent voicing of so many characters. It is a true pleasure to hear what he can do to bring a story to life. There’s no low point in a Harry Frost narrated story.

Original Storyline!

I loved this story from beginning to end. There is a Darcy and Elizabeth romance but it feels more like a story of Elizabeth’s reunion and reintegration with her family which was quite lovely! This will go on my favorites list and reread many times. Harry Frost was magnificent as the narrator!

An absolute favorite!

I love the storyline! I’ll be listening again as I thoroughly enjoyed it. I prefer the low angst stories. The narrator was superb as always. I highly recommend this variation! There are surprises in how some of the characters improve during the story or are portrayed more favorably.

Loved the Fitzwilliam family

Harry Frost makes this enjoyable story even better. Five stars for the narration and performance. I love the not-a-Bennet trope, but the love story between Elizabeth and Darcy seems a bit lacking in this variation, and is more focused on Elizabeth and her new/lost family, unwanted suitors and an unknown villain for the most part. That said, it’s still a very good story with great character portrayals, and the Fitzwilliam/Darcy family ties and care for Elizabeth wonderful.

Mystery- who is Elizabeth Bennet?

In this out of canon story it opens with Elizabeth saying with her beloved aunt and uncle. Questions….why is she there? What’s going on back home? And who exactly is she?

This is an Elizabeth is not a Bennet story that explores her origin along with who and why she was taken as a child. The mystery slowly is unraveled as the story progresses. Darcy is her strong supporter and stands by her as she meets her family. This is such a loving and devoted family that encompasses her into the fold. This Lady Catherine is very likable and gives Elizabeth some truths she needs to hear. Attila, the dog steels the show!

Audiobook: I got this in addition to the book and it brings a 4 star story to a 5! Harry Frost was an excellent choice for narrator. I will gladly listen to this again!
