Publisher's summary

Why would you pretend your life is a dream when you’re living a nightmare?

I thought my sister was happy. I thought what we all thought: that Annie and Dom led perfect lives in a lovely cottage in a quiet village by the sea, with flowers at the front gate and an apple tree in the garden. Everyone knew them: generous, loving Dom, creative, joyful Annie.

But I never saw Annie as she sat waiting for Dom well into the night. I didn’t see her smiling through her tears. I didn’t know what the perfect couple was hiding.

So when sirens break the silence of the night and flames rise against the dark sky, and I get the call I never expected, I’m left with a simple burning question: Who was to blame?

A brilliantly twisty tale of family secrets and the darkness that can lie behind closed doors. Fans of Lisa Jewell, Gillian Flynn, and Louise Candlish will love it.

Good book, except...

I got a bit bored in the first half of the book. A bit too drawn out and Annie too annoyingly submissive. I have known women in bad situations and know it's hard to understand the reasons for staying with bad men. I got much more interested in the second half and enjoyed the book.

Loved it!!

Good read. I guessed the twist; but it was still enjoyable to hear it all play out in the end.

Seemed soooo long ....and then a ridiculous ending

The ending made me feel I disappointed I had wasted 11 hours of my life listening to this book. After dragging out the plot for so many hours I didn't expect such a ridiculous ending. Be warned....rather chose another SE Lynes book.

Good story however.. animal cruelty jokes

There’s a part in the book where they are having a conversation about things ppl leave in hotels. They were joking about a dog left in a room . Supposedly hilarious… then went on to joke about kids putting a small dog in a chest freezer. The dog was ok they go on to say but they think its hilarious. The author missed the mark on this… that’s sociopath behavior and not funny nor do I think its realistic that ppl would use it as a “ hilarious” anecdote.
Sorry… really turned me off. Animal cruelty isn’t funny or cute or fodder for party anecdotes. I found putting a small dog in a chest freezer disturbing. Book ruined for me.

Absolute dreck

I had just finished Can You See Her?, and was excited to move on to another Lynes mystery. Her writing in that novel reminded me a tiny bit of Ruth Rendell's, so I wanted more. While this started out promising, the protagonist is so unbelievably irritating and flat-out stupid that it was hard to get through. The characters are not fleshed out well, the "twist" is not very twisted, and the ending is terrible. Save your money.

No “jokes”about animal cruelty

There is no place for “jokes” about cruelty towards animals.
Also the notion that this is supposed to be some hilarious anecdote is equally disturbing.
You will lose a lot of potential fans with stuff like that....
And, as a previous reviewer pointed out, it’s also a bit sociopathic. So just no.
