About this listen

The uplifting, amazing true story — a New York Times best seller!

This edition of Margot Lee Shetterly’s acclaimed book is perfect for young students. It's the powerful story of four African-American female mathematicians at NASA who helped achieve some of the greatest moments in our space program. Before John Glenn orbited the earth, or Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, a group of dedicated female mathematicians known as “human computers” used pencils, slide rules, and adding machines to calculate the numbers that would launch rockets, and astronauts, into space.

This book brings to life the stories of Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Christine Darden, who lived through the Civil Rights era, the Space Race, the Cold War, and the movement for gender equality, and whose work forever changed the face of NASA and the country.

This middle grade nonfiction book is an excellent choice for tween children in grades 4 to 6, in the classroom or for homeschooling.

Our house rule is to read the book before seeing the movie. When we listened to these women's stories we were impressed and amazed. The movie was a cute representation, but the book just intensifies the details. Highly recommend getting the"real" story!

Movie is cute, but read the book!

My 10 year old and I listened to this together, so this is our combined opinion. It was good but a little monotonous, both in story and voice. It was still very interesting and eye opening to learn about the history.

I had higher expectations

I am a 6th grade Science teacher. I used this book/ audible in my class for two weeks as I was starting my unit on Investigating Space. Scholars loved the connections with the book as we were learning about NASA and historical events in space.

My students LOVED this book!
