About this listen

Agatha isn't looking forward to Christmas. While other eight-year-olds are hoping for a pile of presents, she just wants her evil stepsisters to leave her alone. Summer and Rain have a cruel idea of what passes for fun, and it always involves tormenting Agatha.

When the three of them get stuck inside their house on Christmas Eve, the twins force Agatha to play a twisted version of hide and seek. But they aren't the only things hiding in the house, and someone is about to get more than they bargained for beneath the tree.

Entertaining Christmas Tale

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Sure. It's a fun listen for anyone wanting to hear something a little different at Christmas.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Hide and Seek?

When Agatha was exploring the attic.

Have you listened to any of Jessica McEvoy’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I'm familiar with Jessica's work on The No Sleep Podcast. She's a fantastic narrator. I don't think there's a character that Jessica can't do. She's incredibly talented.

If you could take any character from Hide and Seek out to dinner, who would it be and why?

The toy Santa from the attic. You'll have to listen to the story to know why!

What did you like best about this story?

The atmosphere and attention given to detail in the story really make the world feel solid.

What about Jessica McEvoy’s performance did you like?

It was excellent as always.

If you could take any character from Hide and Seek out to dinner, who would it be and why?

No, they're kids. That would be odd. This is an odd question.

Hide and Seek is a short, quick and creepy listen.

Agatha is an eight year old girl that has a divorced and remarried mother and step father. Her new father also has two young girls, a little older than her, but right around her age. These two step sisters are the stereotypical evil step sisters that plague Agatha's every waking moment. The story is told in the first person from Agatha's perspective. So we get to experience the torment in full force.

I had a feeling that the ending was going to end with a twist but it was not the twist I thought it was going to be. This always tells me that the author, Caryn Larrinaga, has real talent as to not give everything away in a straight forward manner. Making the paranormal aspect hit me in the face with a huge face palm.

For a horror story it was pretty tame and focused almost solely on the emotional torture that Agatha has been going through. Making it a really good psychological suspense thriller.

I really enjoyed Jessica McEvoy's voice. Female narrators, at least the ones that I have listened to, tend to have a very youthful, high pitched voice that do have their place. McEvoy does not have this, at least not in this story, she uses a soft-spoken, almost a loud whisper throughout. That was perfect for keeping the story on the creepy side.

A Quick but Satisfying Christmas Chill

Where does Hide and Seek rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It's hard to compare, as this is more of a novella than a novel, but it's a complete story with a resolution sure to leave you with a wicked smile on your face.

What did you like best about this story?

Like any great story, the best part is its climax, which I won't ruin here. However, I really enjoyed some of the "old school" references along the way. It's clear the author is of my generation (the 1980s). :)

Have you listened to any of Jessica McEvoy’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I'm a major admirer of Jessica McEvoy's work, and this one surely does not disappoint. Wicked young people (and their prey) are her stock and trade. She does voices so well. No one could have done a better job on a story like this--no exaggeration. Honest opinion.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me laugh--but then, I'm a very sick individual.

Hide and Seek

Agatha is an eight year old just trying to avoid trouble with her new stepsisters. Summer and Rain are constantly tormenting her, no matter what she does. When her Mom and stepfather leave the three girls alone on Christmas Eve, Agatha hopes she can survive their cruel "games"

When the two lock Agatha in the attic, she begins to explore and finds some old Christmas decorations. When she discovers a creepy Santa doll, she asks for the one thing she really wants for Christmas: that Summer and Rain would never torment her again!

This is a short, but creepy, story that is sure to entertain readers who enjoy short horror tales. This is a great read with a surprising ending that reminds us to be careful what we wish for. The narrator does a great job and added a lot to my enjoyment of the tale. I was given the chance to listen to the Audiobook version of this book by the author/narrator/publisher and chose to review it.
