About this listen

Little Women is the story of a wife and her four daughters living in genteel poverty in the environs of Boston while the father is away as a chaplain in the Union Army during the Civil War.

So natural are the actions and dialogue of the charming Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy, that even today Little Women is enjoyable without a sense of Victorian stiffness.

This heartwarming story is Louisa May Alcott's masterpiece. She was born in German town Pennsylvania in 1832. Before becoming an author, she was a nurse at the Union hospital in Georgetown during the Civil War. She died in 1888.

Lots Duncan says of Little Women: "It speaks directly to the hearts of people of any generation who know what it's like to be part of a caring family."

Editorial reviews

Listeners are invited to take a trip to Orchard House and spend a Christmas with Meg, Jo, Beth, and that "regular snow-maiden" known as Amy March. Has any set of sisters so firmly implanted themselves on the American imagination? Lovingly performed with gentle characterizations and understatement by Rebecca Burns, Louisa May Alcott’s beloved Little Women is the classic 1868 tale of four sisters doing the best they can in Concord, Massachusetts, despite their poverty and their father’s faraway post in the Civil War.

Generations of children have loved this tale of burgeoning womanhood and family life, and critics have praised it for its Dickensian depth and simple joy. Little Women is a tenderly woven swatch in the fabric of Americana.

This classic book has a lot of thechnical hiccups. Strange blipping. Repeated santences for no reason. The narrator is ok. But the story still takes your breath away.

Classic

This story feels like a warm hug. It covers the complexities of life in the most simple way, and all the characters feel like dear friends. I'm in awe of how the beauty of the ups and downs were captured so elegantly.

A Wholesome Real Story

As some other people pointed out, at first I also thought that this was read by an AI. But once I got used to the style and tone of the reader (which by the end actually turned out to be quite soothing and emotional), I enjoyed the book immensely. So much to learn from.

Once I got used to the tone, it was amazing

while I always enjoy most of the story, the chapters with poor editing are very distracting. it is disappointing that this has never been corrected, but it would be very easy: they're when Laurie is in Nice with Amy; a number of parts repeat.
Aside from that extreme annoyance, the story is exactly as one might expect: old-fashioned, a smidge preachy (but not even that bad) and nice happy endings all round.

a classic, of course

So sweet and tender, loved this audio book. Very nice reading and storyline. Best story I've listened to

Just loved this so much

I have started this book several times in the past, and just could not get into it. Finally, I decided to get through the first few chapters and then stop if it still did not interest me. My plan worked and I was hooked. I laughed out loud on many occasions, empathized with the characters and shed many tears. My 17 year old son had to read it for school and now calls me marmee which always gets a little giggle out ofme.😊

Very sweet story

I started another audiobook of Little Women and soon found that it was not the full story. After looking around, I found that it was difficult to find an unabridged audiobook but was very happy to find this one. While the narrator wasn’t my favorite, she was still very good- and I appreciated the way she brought the characters to voice, even as they matured. This is a story I would dearly recommend to every heart. I have gained so much from listening to it. These little women have become dear friends to me and I will continue to keep them close to my heart. What great joys and deep sorrows lie within the stories of all our lives and how beautifully Alcott displays them being borne with grace and dignity. A true inspiration and beacon of all that which is good and lovely.

I love this book and it is narrated correctly and with good pronunciation, but very little emotion. it reminds me of AI as read. Very stiff.

sounds like it is read by AI

My only qualm with this edition is that the audio was occasionally marred by repetition. For some reason whole minutes would repeat sometimes thrice in a row. Other than this the narrator was delightful and I wish that I had read this book year earlier.
If you enjoyed 1994’s adaptation you will especially love the greater context and “seeing” these fears more in your mind’s eye.

A sentimental must read

Good performance of a classic. I really enjoyed it. However, I noticed there were parts that repeated themselves.
