About this listen

An ISIS-style beheading of a journalist, carried out by a New York City group pledging fealty to that rogue state, becomes more than just another case for NYPD Captain Nikki Heat when the killers announce their next target: her husband, magazine writer Jameson Rook. Meanwhile, Heat is haunted by a fleeting glimpse of someone she swears is her mother, a woman who has been dead for nearly 20 years.

interesting ending - interesting candidate

I enjoyed the continuation of the "Heat" story & the reference (s) to the current campaign environment. very interesting ending. Mr. Petkopp does an excellent job narrating (as usual).

Great, but...

I can hear Nathan Fillion when I listen to the Castle series. Whoever is actually doing the writing is keeping with the spirit of the TV show. I loved it. This story was great, yet predictable. I kind of knew what was going to happen 3 chapters in. I will listen to the next one though.

BEST HEAT BOOK YET!

What did you love best about High Heat?

I loved everything about this book. Well, I didn't think I was going to like the end but I did. So, funny and such a good plot. Two BIG mysteries hit you in the first 15 min of this book, BAM! I mean BIG MYSTERIES!!! If you love the show you'll love this books even more.

Have you listened to any of Robert Petkoff’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This guy is a great narrator!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed so hard while listening to this book several times.

Any additional comments?

LOVED IT! I want more Richard Castle!!!

I found the story predictable

I did enjoy this book but after I had who all the characters were I pretty much knew who the bad guy was going to be. I still enjoyed the story telling and seeing one of my favorite shows come back to life for a little while.

Great except for the very end

The Heat series books have gotten much better as the series progresses to where the earlier ones were strictly for Castle fans only, but the later ones stand as good ones in the genre. This book had great action and a good mystery right up until the end. The primary mystery got solved and the book should have ended there. Instead, the author sought to add a "bridge to the next book" ending which was, to my mind, completely unbelievable. The final ending is not true to the characters and it makes zero rational sense, and so is just stupid. I realize that because this series is tied to the Castle TV series, they are trying to follow some of the plot lines, but while this particular plot line was semi-believable on the TV show, it makes no sense in this book. This all said, prior to the stupid ending, the book was well-paced. There was some minimal wokeism thrown in, which is always a bit tiresome, but nothing very serious. All in all, a great read.

Not the best one...

Any additional comments?

I've listened to all of the "Richard Castle" books, and while this is not the best Nikki Heat novel, does further the overall story arch, almost as a bridge to something new. There is a D.J. Trump-like character running for President, which could upset many of the Trumpettes, but otherwise I found the story line a little too predictable. Perhaps we are dealing with a novice ghostwriter. Nonetheless, it is entertaining and, in places, gripping. I'm not ashamed to admit I enjoyed this Heat novel.

Excellent and fast paced addition to the series

I enjoyed his latest entry into the Nikki Heat series. It was very topical and quite enjoyable. The emotional development of Nikki in this one is nice to see.

Looks like it's time to read some Storm novel's now.
