About this listen

“My work offers a window into the darkest and lightest corners of people’s lives, into the extremes of human experience,” writes Dr. Chavi Eve Karkowsky in High Risk, her timely and unflinching account of working in maternal-fetal medicine - that branch of medicine that concerns high-risk pregnancies. Whether offering insight into the rise in home births, the alarming rise in America’s maternal mortality rate, or the history of involuntary sterilization, Karkowsky offers a window into all that pregnancy, labor, and birth can entail - birth and joy, but also challenge and loss - illustrating the complexity of reproductive life and the systems that surround it. With historical insight and journalistic verve, Karkowsky unpacks what is involved for women, for a family, and for us as a society; and explores what’s at risk when these aspects of medicine remain clouded in mystery and misinformation.

As a CNM, I appreciated the author’s stories and her acknowledgment of the importance of birth workers- outside of OBGYNs.
The narrator had a nice voice and was easy to listen to. Although, she struggled with some medical pronounciations.

Great peek into the world of birth

This is a thoughtful and insightful book about one woman’s professional and very personal experience delivering high risk pregnant women. The author conveys both her extensive medical knowledge and her own sometimes emotional reactions to her patient interactions when dealing with various pregnancy conditions in a clear and articulate way that both informs and enlightens the reader.

I learned so much from this book and so glad I got the opportunity to read it. I now have knowledge of a lot of things and feel more prepared as I go through my second pregnancy.

Most of my hospital and doctor experiences, though life saving, have been frustrating, humiliating and degrading.
Listening to this book made some of those experiences easier to reflect upon, some of them more enraging than before, and others with deep compassion towards everything and everybody. This book brought me lots of deeper understanding about many aspects of the medical field. I highly recommend! Narration was excellent, too.

Probably the best book I have ever read

As someone that faced a traumatic birth and NICU stay this book was informative and truly allowed me to see a glimpse of what the provider faces.
I’m currently training as a doula and appreciate the multiple ways that doulas and birth teams were included and also praised in this book.
