About this listen

If you want to discover the captivating history of Wisconsin, then pay attention....

The history of Wisconsin is so much more than just exhibits in museums. The 30th state has a long, rich story behind its modern-day façade. Thousands of years ago, ancient peoples hunted giant beasts on the frozen glaciers that have now given way to rivers and lakes. Rich cultures populated the frigid early forests of Wisconsin, eventually giving way to the arrival of French explorers. Soon, the British took over, ushering in an era of booming colonization, and Wisconsin saw its first recorded war. With the American Revolution, Wisconsin became free, and that brought a whole new set of challenges for its people to face.

Wisconsin’s history is as richly detailed and relentlessly interesting as its glorious landscapes. Its history has always paralleled that of the United States, giving a fascinating, deeper glimpse into a story we all know so well. Wisconsin saw the effects of colonialism, stood up for the rights of all people during the Civil War, and endured the wrath of fire. And in this audiobook, you'll discover its story.

In History of Wisconsin: A Captivating Guide to the History of the Badger State, Starting from the Arrival of Jean Nicolet Through the Fox Wars, War of 1812, and Gilded Age to the Present, you will discover topics such as

A great read

I never knew much about Wisconsin. This book gives the overall history of the Ice Age, French and British arrival, the many wars, how the natives were treated (or I should say mistreated), slavery and Wisconsin today. I look forward to visiting there one day now I know where to visit. It was a great read.

Bad title- 95% of it is 1871 and earlier

It is an interesting book for what it is, but the title saying that it covers to modern day is inaccurate. Essentially the entire book covers 1871 and before. Then the last 10 minutes jumps to an event in 1970 and then mentions some political characteristics of Wisconsin.

good history but butchered names

The narrator for the most part knew what he was talking about except for the pronunciation of the French explorers' names as well as those of the various native Americans tribal names.

Learning about my home state

This is a great overview of the history of Wisconsin. I learned many facts about my native state that I hadn't known before. I knew Wisconsin played a part in the Civil War, as I've been to Vicksburg and seen the monuments. I did not know about the Iron Brigade and the large role Wisconsin played in the Battle of Vicksburg and the war overall. I also wasn't aware of the history of Red Bird and the Hochunk or the story of Joshua Glover. I greatly enjoyed this history.

Highly liberal bias, not always factually correct.

Book states the Madison is on the shores of lake Michigan. It also heroixes the 1970 Madison bombers.

This book is pretty bad

The book advertises itself as a history of the state when in reality they barely touch most of the states history, briefly noting Wisconsins contributions in wars but largely filling the book with information about the revolution and the civil war that had little to do with the state. The book made no mention about the types of immigrants that came to its state and the one industry it talked about in some detail, but not much, was the logging industry as a segue into the Peshtigo fire. You could read a children’s book on the history of Wisconsin and get a more well rounded account of the state. Lazy writing and misleading description of the book.

Pronunciations horribly wrong, do some research

I forgot to mention in my first review that many of the pronunciations by the narrator were horribly wrong. Case in point is the Potawatomi tribe. Also, geography was inaccurate, at one point they said Madison is on Lake Michigan ... it is nearly 100 miles inland.

A few errors

Storytelling was a bit disjointed. Several errors, like saying Madison is on Lake Michigan. Narrator mispronounced many things.
