Murder, trauma, and raising children—who said love was easy?
Mac and Tony thought the hard part was over. They’re together openly as a couple, sharing a home and building a life with their two kids. It’s what they dreamed of.
But daughter Anna struggles with the changes, Ben is haunted by old secrets, Mac’s job in Homicide still demands too much of his time, and Tony is caught in the middle. It’ll take everything these men can give to create a viable balance between home and work. Especially when life refuses to give them a break.
(This is a lightly edited rerelease of the 2012 original novel.)

As I've said before, I have a low tolerance for relationship angst unless it's handled well. Well-written, no b.s. gratuitous misunderstandings, no gratuitous break-up, yada. Circumstantial/external angst that serves the plot and develops the relationship - I'm all in for that!
As the publisher's blurb makes clear, this book is different from the first two, in that we see Tony and Mac suddenly learning to be parents and balance the pulls of work, parenting and relationship. That took up a fair amount of the beginning, which was completely appropriate for their story arc. That's where they were. Any other treatment would have been too Disney or would have been ignoring that huge aspect of their lives and relationship. As a parent with a husband who works a lot, I found this part of the story wonderfully authentic.
I've only read a few series in which one couple's relationship spans three or more books. I'm always impressed when an author pulls it off. Obviously, it can give much more time to explore the changing landscape of a relationship, and Kaje Harper does so with wisdom and sensitivity.
I also wonder how each book will successfully execute a new plot that stands on its own while at the same time developing the relationship and interweaving the relationship with the external plot. The police procedural/thriller aspect of this book was riveting. I don't want to say too much more.
I was so moved by this book. Wonderful, wonderful.
Audiobook: J.F Harding is fantastic. Again, not the absolute best at children's and women's voices, but good enough, and the variety of other character voices is great. His narration is superb. And I really have fallen in love with how he voices Mac.
So much heart and such a thrilling plot!

But back to Mac and Tony. They’re living together and trying to make their family work. Mac’s daughter Anna is still struggling with being away from Aunt Brenda and her extreme religious views. Tony’s Ben is still dealing with the trauma of losing his mom and of secrets he struggles to admit. To top it all off, Mac’s got a new case and that means Tony’s carrying much of the load at home. But they have supportive people in their lives who step up to help with the kids. Especially when something life-altering happens to Mac.
This book is as much about the pauses as it is about the action. Yes, I wanted to know who the killer was. Yes, I wanted to know if justice would be served. But I also wanted to know how the men held together their precious family. How the kids coped with their demons. How Tony and Mac found time to solidify their relationship while keeping the kids and their needs always just right there.
This series is narrated by J.F. Harding, who I think has done a fantastic job. Through the last bit of the book, he had an extra challenge that he handled brilliantly. And although the books are most enjoyed in order, this one is so good it could stand on its own. I’m so glad these have finally come to audio – a way for old fans to reconnect with characters they love and for new fans to discover Ms. Harper’s great story.
Addictive Series

In this Mac and Tony are out as a couple and decide to get married
( I’m not calling that a spoiler)
Though as all things in life happen especially in fiction and suspense twists and turns take place.
In the first book I was on edge but jiminy Christmas I almost fainted here. Kaje how could you?!!
Now on to the next book because yes it’s a series, yes it’s ongoing and yes a bit of a cliffhanger but oh so good!
I did listen to this and recommend if you have a chance to do so. The narration adds that extra excitement and I really wonder how long they practiced Mac’s Part towards the end. That had to be hard to do.
So exciting
